OLD TOWN – Firefighters from two departments rushed to the aid of one of their own Wednesday afternoon. A South Main Street house owned by a Bangor firefighter had about $2,000 in damage when a fire started near a shed attached to the home.

Firefighters rushed from a negotiating session with City Manager Paul Mazzaccaro when the call came in about 12:45 p.m., according to Mazzaccaro.

Old Town firefighter Donald Preble, who is a tenant at the residence owned by Matthew Costello, heard the call over the scanner. Preble was not home when the fire broke out.

Preble reportedly called Assistant Fire Chief Roger Sirois while he was en route to the fire to tell Sirois that he lived at that address.

Sirois said later Wednesday afternoon that Preble even gave directions to the house.

Orono firefighters assisted with the relatively small Old Town fire, delaying the start of a dorm fire demonstration at the University of Maine by more than 30 minutes.
