Man arrested twice charged with assault, criminal mischief

BANGOR – A 31-year-old man was arrested twice over the weekend. James Leroy McArthur was charged with domestic assault on Saturday, then charged with criminal mischief and violation of release 31/2 hours later.

Bangor police responded to a family fight complaint about 11 p.m. Saturday at a Union Street apartment house. A woman told officers that McArthur came home drunk after being out with friends.

When she refused to let him in the apartment, McArthur kicked in the door, according to police reports. She told officers that he smashed plants and threw her around.

He was taken to Penobscot County Jail where his blood alcohol level registered .17 percent, more than twice the legal limit. McArthur was released on bail about 2:20 a.m. on the condition that he have no contact with the victim of the assault.

Police were called to the residence again about 2:45 p.m. Sunday. The woman who had reported the assault told officers that she had heard breaking glass, then her car alarm went off. She said that she looked out the window and saw the man who had assaulted her walking away from the vehicle.

Officers located McArthur hiding behind a building at Third and Cedar streets. When police arrested him a second time, he kicked at the cruiser and spit on the windows of the police car.
