Tapley baserunning leads Panthers to win

MARS HILL – Jason Tapley walked, stole second, and scored the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning as Central Aroostook knocked off Van Buren 19-18 in high school baseball action Saturday.

Jeff Clockedile homered and nailed two singles with two RBIs for the Panthers. Brian Grew singled four times with three RBIs and Lance Bradstreet ripped three singles.

Eric Ayotte led the Crusaders with a triple, singled and three RBIs. Matt Gagnon notched three singles and three RBIs.

At Washburn, Josh Maynard hit three singles and notched the game-winning RBI in the sixth as Washburn downed Madawaska.

Josh Worsley ripped an RBI double for the Beavers while Chris Tupper tallied nine strikeouts on the mound.

David Daigle doubled with an RBI as Alex Daigle also belted a double.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Adam Bither’s RBI single in the fifth inning snapped a 3-3 tie in favor of the Hawks.

With the Blue Devils leading 3-1, Ben Carton singled and stole second. Matt Day singled home Carton. Later in the inning, with Day on second and David Stewart on first, Evan Bither singled to score Day and tie the game.

Derek Nickerson picked up the win, striking out six and walking two, and also had an RBI single.

Calais received singles from Joe Footer, Scott MacDonald and James MacDonald.

Lee Academy 15, Katahdin 2

At Lee, freshman Nate Dow picked up his first win as he pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and also singled twice with three RBIs as the Pandas rolled over the Cougars.

Tristan Blanchard ripped a three-run double in the first inning for Lee and Jeremy Ham added a double with two RBIs.

Travis Roy led Katahdin of Sherman Station with a two-run double.

At Caribou, Cole McElwain struck out 12 and walked only three to lead John Bapst over Caribou.

James Strout notched two doubles and a single with two RBIs for the Crusaders of Bangor. Bill Chapman doubled twice and Andy Tremble ripped a two-run home run.

Jerry Shanahan led the Viking attack with two singles.

Brewer, Presque Isle split

At Presque Isle, Shane Clark belted two doubles and drove in the winning run as the Wildcats took the second game of a doubleheader against the Witches 2-1. Brewer won the first game 5-2.

In the opener, Chris Cote nailed a game-winning two-run double in the eighth for the Witches as Seth Bernier doubled and singled with an RBI. Marcus Nadeau singled twice with an RBI while Josh Gale also ripped two singles for Presque Isle.

In the nightcap, Fred Bird added an RBI single for the Wildcats. Joel Barrett notched a double for Brewer and scored on a Justin Spencer double for the Witches’ only run of the game.

At Milo, Adam Foster’s two-run home run and single led the Tigers past the Patriots.

Ross Morison led Dexter with a triple, double, and single with an RBI as Dan Fields tripled and singled and Adam Russell nailed two singles.

Jason Stubbs hit an RBI single while Anders Hamlin singled twice for Penquis.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Robbie Crocker powered the Ponies over the Red Riots with two singles and an RBI.

Kyle Wentworth and Chris Walker each singled with an RBI as Travis Hewes also ripped a single for Foxcroft.

Mike Merritt belted a double and a single for Orono. Ryan Levesque, Al Glossian, and Tom Round each nailed singles.

At Mount Desert Island, Brian Tewhey’s two-run double and a Jason Robbins RBI single in the sixth inning helped lift the Indians past the Trojans.

Tewhey also hit a two-run homer in the second inning and added an RBI single in the first. Roger Cole hit a two-run single and Jason Robbins chipped in with an RBI single.

Basil Mahaney and Travis Tripp each doubled, singled, and drove in two runs for MDI.

At Ellsworth, Justin Libbey’s triple and RBI single helped lift the Rams.

Andy Sullivan allowed only one hit and struck out five in five innings of work while both Josh Johnson and Jim Shea ripped RBI singles for Bangor.

Derek Awalt and Jeff Desmond each singled and scored a run for the Eagles.

At Bangor, Katie Frost fired a one-hitter with eleven strikeouts and also notched two singles for two RBIs to power the Blue Devils over the Hawks.

Lanna Martin doubled with an RBI and Mia Silverthorne ripped an RBI single for Calais.

At Ellsworth, Jen Jimmo pitched a one-hitter, and scored the winning run on a Megan Huckins sacrifice fly in the fourth inning as the Rams slipped past the Eagles.

Jimmo recorded two singles for Bangor’s only hits. She struck out one and walked one.

Hiedi Chan lead off the game with a single, Ellsworth’s lone hit. Mallory Patten struck out three and walked none in her two-hitter, and the defense recorded inning-ending double plays in the sixth and seventh.

At Caribou, Nikki Novak notched three singles with an RBI and scored three runs for John Bapst as they rolled over Caribou.

Christina Rich doubled and singled with an RBI for the Crusaders of Bangor. Alex Waring belted two singles.

Jamie Landeen, Liz Andrews, and Jessica Hartley each singled for the Vikings.

At Fort Fairfield, Ashlee Bubar scattered six hits in five innings while striking out four and walking one in the Tigers’ victory.

Brooke McCrum notched three singles for the winners and Terri Lynch and Ellie Arato each chipped in with two singles and two RBIs.

Megan McLaughlin singled twice and drive in a run for Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook and Rhonda Chambers added two singles.

Brewer sweeps Presque Isle

At Presque Isle, the Witches pounded out 27 hits and 35 runs in two games to top the Wildcats 10-1 and 25-1.

In the first game, Sherri Capponi hurled a two-hitter, doubled and drove in three runs. Rachel Wing hit a two-run single, Caroline McAvoy singled twice and Jenny Higgins added an RBI single for Brewer. Lauren Wildeman led Presque Isle with a double, a single and an RBI.

In the second game, Higgins smacked a triple, a double and two singles. Wing doubled and hit two singles, and McAvoy doubled twice. Jessie Miller hit two singles for Presque Isle and scored on an error. Four different players added a single apiece.
