CHERRYFIELD – The Transportation Division of the Washington Hancock Community Agency celebrated Volunteer Week with its annual Volunteer Driver Banquet and Training on April 25 at the Cherryfield American Legion Hall.
Drivers recognized included Beverly Pinkham of Gouldsboro for most miles – 69,953 – and the 50,000-mile-per-year club with Janet Bunker, Stephanie Demoranville, Pete Legere, Carla Fletcher and Beverly Pinkham. Roland Smith was chosen to receive a clock for his 16 years of service.
Volunteer drivers donate time transporting people who do not have vehicles to medical appointments in Washington and Hancock counties.
Linda Rolfe, a former WHCA dispatcher, gave a eulogy for Annie Merchant of Beals who died in April. Merchant was a volunteer driver for many years and in 1996 received the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service Benefiting Local Communities. Linda Belfiore, administrative director of the Transportation Services Division, announced the Annie Merchant Volunteer Driver Award. For information, call Marcia Weaver at (800) 690-1252.
