Calais High School

CALAIS – Graduation exercises will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Calais High School. Class Night will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30.

Valedictorian is Meghan Day, daughter of Patricia Day of Alexander. She is the Maine National Award Horatio Alger Scholar, received the Maine Principal’s Award, is senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a member of the student council, math team, foreign language club, Civil Rights Team, and concert and pep bands. She was a delegate to Dirigo Girls State and has achieved high honors all four years. She played volleyball for three years and was co-captain this year. She took part in the 2000 Quest Scholars Program at Harvard and was the Bausch & Lomb Science Award winner last year. She is a Maine Scholars Achievement Award winner and finalist for the National Achievement Scholar Award. She also is a winner of the Seven Sisters Book Award. She is a three-year member of the U.S. Academic Decathlon Team. She will attend Harvard on a full scholarship.

Salutatorian is Rebecca Cashore, daughter of John and Diane Cashore of Robbinston. She is vice president of the Calais chapter of the National Honor Society and the senior class. She was a member of the U.S. Academic Decathlon team the last two years, and helped the team place first in the Eastern Region and among the top 10 USAD teams in Maine. She also is a member of the foreign language club and math team, took part in band, VICA and tennis, and was a cheerleader all four years.

Undergraduate address will be given by Sarah Ludington, daughter of Dr. Laurie Churchill and Greg Ludington. She has received honors consistently and is a member of the National Honor Society, the U.S. Academic Decathlon Team, the Civil Rights Team and the math team. She played varsity soccer four years, junior varsity basketball, varsity basketball and varsity softball. She represented the school at VICA her junior year.

Julie Reynolds, daughter of Geri Reynolds and Mike Reynolds of Calais, will deliver the welcome speech at Class Night. She is a Horatio Alger State Award winner and a member of the National Honor Society. She received the Xerox Award scholarship for $10,000 and has taken accelerated classes receiving honors all four years. She was captain of the varsity girls soccer team. She is a member of the math team and Jobs for Maine’s Graduates, AIDS Awareness Team and took part in American Heart Association walk-a-thons and Santa’s Help walk-a-thons. She is a volunteer youth soccer coach for the Calais Recreation Department. She will attend the University of Maine, Orono.

Amanda Olson, daughter of Mark and Susan Olson of Robbinston, will give the farewell speech at Class Night. She has won a full tuition scholarship at the University of Maine, Orono. She is a member of the National Honor Society and served as the society’s parliamentarian. She worked on the yearbook committee three years and is co-editor of the yearbook this year. She also took part on the prom committee.

James Philip Frost Jr., son of James and Lori Frost of Calais, will give the welcome address at graduation. He plans to attend Campbell University, Buies Creek, N.C. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was elected historian of the Calais chapter this year. He was active in baseball, basketball and golf and achieved DAC All Star in baseball. He was named to the 2000 NHSCA High School All-American Golf Team, and is a three-time Class C State Champion. He is High School Golfer of the Year and High School Golf Most Valuable Player.

Kari Redding, daughter of Jeffery and Mary Jean Redding of Calais, will introduce the commencement guest speaker. She is a merit scholarship winner for St. Joseph’s College, Standish. She also has been accepted at Mount Allison University. She is a member of the National Honor Society, been active in prom committee, yearbook, math team, and Civil Rights Team. She is the career development officer for JMG. She was softball team captain, varsity soccer DAC All Star, and captain of the girls varsity basketball team. She has worked summers as a lifeguard and weekends at State Cinema.
