CORINTH – The Central High School Red Devils, twice within a strike of falling victim to the mercy rule, overcame a 16-5 deficit to stun the Piscataquis Community Pirates 18-17 in nine innings of baseball action Monday.
Mike Strout’s grand slam and James Gray’s two-run single keyed a 10-run sixth-inning rally that brought the Devils back.
Robbie Girvan’s seventh-inning double drove in the tying run and the Devils won it in the ninth on Lowell Oyster’s RBI single and Seth Strout game-ending sacrifice fly.
Billy Kane had a triple and a single and three RBIs and Andy Matulis had two singles and two RBIs for Central, which beat PCHS for the second time this season.
Ben Smith drove in seven runs for PCHS with a grand slam homer, a two-run shot and a pair of doubles. Shane Priest knocked in two runs with a double and two singles and Scott DeCastro delivered two runs with a homer and sacrifice fly.

At Thorndike, Keith Fuller’s bases-loaded two-out single to right field in the bottom of the seventh delivered Chris Carman from third base with the winning run for the Mustangs.
Brian Bernosky doubled, singled twice, drove in a run, and was intentionally walked in the seventh to load the bases. Carman doubled and singled while Fuller and Kenton Spaulding contributed two singles and an RBI apiece.
Wayne Bridgham doubled, singled, and knocked in a run for Erskine Academy of South China. Chance Singleton and Warren Gosselin had two singles each.

Three two-out walks, the only ones allowed by Mike Daggett, and an infield error produced the two runs.
Daggett struck out 12 and gave up seven hits.
Abe Dugal had two singles for Camden Hills and Tom Dennen doubled.

At Bangor’s Husson College, lefty Cole McElwain hurled five innings of four-hit, one-run ball, striking out five, and batterymate Brandon Gray drove in three runs with a pair of singles as John Bapst improved to 11-3. The only run off McElwain was unearned.
Zach Means’ third-inning sacrifice fly gave the Crusaders the lead for good and Gray’s two-run single highlighted a five-run fifth inning that cemented the win.
James Strout doubled and singled for John Bapst and Bryan Snyder and Zev Myerowitz chipped in with two singles and an RBI apiece.
B.J. Greenleaf had two base hits for MDI.

At Corinth, Central was outslugged 14-11 in the hits category, but the Red Devils won thanks to errorless ball and a four-run sixth inning.
Jen Allen and Meghan Simons led the Devils with two singles apiece. Simons had four RBIs and Allen had three. Terri Underhill had a triple, a single, and two RBIs, Amy Shaw a double and single, and Jess Kaelin had two singles and one RBI.
Bethany Wentworth had a triple, three singles and three RBIs for Piscataquis of Guilford. Greta Korsman had three singles and two RBIs while Alice White hit three singles.

Freshman righty Lindsey Barlow scattered six hits over five innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Ashley Cluff had two singles and three RBIs for John Bapst and Levenson-Falk had a single to go with her triple.
