Women golfers who think they would enjoy a tournament all their own certainly will want to play in the first Women’s Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the Good Samaritan Agency in Bangor.
The nine-hole, four-woman scramble tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. The rain date is Friday, June 22.
The tournament fee is $50 per person, and you can sign up as an individual or as a member of a four-woman team. A limited number of carts will be available for $5 per person.
“We have room for 64 players on 16 teams of four, and I believe we have 11 teams signed up, so we still have some openings,” said Good Sam’s Lisa Wahlstrom.
And while the committee still is seeking hole sponsors, undoubtedly it would be great to double its original goal of one sponsor per hole since “we now have almost two sponsors for every hole,” Wahlstrom said.
If you would like to add your name or business as a hole sponsor, you can do that for $100.
Businesses can sponsor a tournament contest or event for $250, or the social hour following the tournament for $350.
Janet Milley of Bangor is chairwoman of the event.
Wahlstrom said some Good Sam board members who are golfers, such as Milley, Jane Madigan of Bangor and former Women’s Maine State Golf Association champion Julie Green of Bangor, all agreed a golf tournament for women should be very well received in this area.
The fact that only a few openings remain has proved their assumption was correct.
One added attraction is a complimentary golf clinic before the tournament.
Wahlstrom said the committee views this new tournament as “something that should be a lot of fun.”
“It’s a great opportunity for women to get together and have fun, and benefit an organization at the same time,” she said. “Jane Jennings is planning the social hour after the event, which should be a very nice end to the afternoon,” Wahlstrom added.

Something for everyone is what you will find if you participate in the 10th annual Cobscook Bay 10K Race, beginning with sign-up at 8:30 a.m. behind Antone’s Triangle Store on Route 1 in Pembroke.
The event, which benefits Down East Hospice of Calais, is the third in the Sub-5 Track Club race series. It also includes a 5K run-walk and a 1-mile fun run for children.
The fun run begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 5K and 10K races at 10 a.m.
Entry fees are $10 for adults, $6 for those ages 16-and-under, or a maximum of $30 per family.
However, you can help DEH even more if you solicit pledges and, if you present $15 or more in donations on race day, your entry fee will be refunded at that time.
In addition helping support the work of DEH, the event helps raise awareness of the nonprofit organization, which provides free care and support to terminally ill people and their families, as well as grieving individuals, who reside in Washington County.
The nationally certified race follows one of the most scenic courses in New England, passing the western shore of Cobscook Bay and finishing at Pembroke’s Reversing Falls Park.
Prizes will be awarded to overall winners and second- and third-place finishers in the 5K, and winners in various age divisions.
The first 50 people to register prior to Thursday, May 31, will receive free T-shirts; a prize raffle will be conducted for all participants; and a picnic-cookout will follow the awards ceremony at the park where volunteers will be available to answer questions about the services of DEH.
You also can take a chance on a king-size quilt volunteers are creating from 10 years of race T-shirts.
For more information, or to request an entry form, contact Jonathan Aretakis after 5 p.m. at 726-5858 or e-mail jaretakis@loa.com.
You also can show up the day of the race and register at that time.

Second, if you are a singer, you are asked to come prepared to sing a solo, and bring a copy of your music. If your music is not memorized, please bring your own copy.
And, if you are a dancer, you will be asked to learn a short piece of choreography at the time of your audition.
Finally, for your own piece of mind, Follies organizers promise that all those who audition will be notified.
