Smith leads No. 1 Van Buren past Fort Kent

VAN BUREN – Van Buren lefthander Phil Smith struck out 15 and walked none as he no-hit the Fort Kent Warriors as the No. 1 team in Class D, the Crusaders, prevailed 4-0 in schoolboy baseball action Tuesday.

Tyler Hughes broke up a no-hit bid by Fort Kent’s Jesse Jalbert with a two-out, RBI double in the seventh.

Jalbert pitched a one-hitter, taking the tough-luck loss.

At Houlton, Ben Weston cranked an RBI double to highlight Houlton’s seven-run third inning.

Billy Washburn chipped in with a double for the winners.

Andy Frost notched three singles and an RBI for the winners.

At Mars Hill, Matt McCluskey, who singled three times with an RBI, scored the game-winner from second base on a wild pitch as the Warriors of Dyer Brook prevailed.

Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook scored 10 unearned runs as Central Aroostook made 18 errors. The Warriors twice overcame six-run deficits to tie the game.

The Panthers were led by Kyle Larabee, who had an RBI triple, an RBI single and a double. Brian Grew singled twice (3 RBIs).

At Danforth, Chris Tupper recorded a double and three singles to power the Beavers.

Trevor Thibodeau and Josh Worsley each added a double and single for the winners and Frank Plucker had three singles.

Darius Parker doubled and singled for the Vikings and Josh Rollins singled twice. Scott Flannery and Jim Zugelder added a double apiece.

At Guilford, Dennis Glynn pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven, as the Pirates knocked off the Pandas.

Buddy Leavitt paced Piscataquis with four singles and an RBI. Randy Burgess hit a two-run home run in the sixth.

Nate Dow and Blair Emery singled twice each for Lee Academy.

At Orono, Mike Merritt’s single in the sixth led to the game-winner as the Red Riots swept their rivals for the season.

Merritt singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Old Town catcher Roger Cole attempted to throw Merritt out, but the throw went into left field, allowing the eventual game-winning run to score.

Andy Pease and Chris Brissette singled for the Indians’ only hits.

At East Millinocket, Keith Champion rapped a double and three singles (1 RBI) and Brandon Saucier doubled three times with three RBIs as the Howlers won.

Marshall Wakefield hit a double and two singles (2 RBIs) and Ben Sereyko singled three times for Penobscot Valley of Howland behind winner Cody Thompson, who pitched four innings of shutout relief.

Pat Jamo hit an RBI double for Schenck.

Mariners sweep Royals

At Jonesport, the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners improved to 7-5 with 10-6 and 10-7 victories over Jonesport-Beals.

Daryl Dunhan paced the Mariners in the first game with three singles. Evan Haskell chipped in with two singles and an RBI and Justin Boyce added two singles.

Darren Kelley and Alvin Beal each notched two singles for the Royals.

Eric Ray paced the Mariners in the second game with three singles and two RBIs. Josh Bolton added a single, double and three RBIs and Boyce notched a single, double and triple.

At Madawaska, Eric Crook and Daniel Buckley each recorded three singles to help the Limestone/School of Mathematics and Science beat Madawaska.

Dereck Patten chipped in with a double, single and RBI for the winners and Steve Hardwick added a single and RBI.

Andrew Martin and Marc Garcia each singled twice for Madawaska and David Daigle had a two-run double.

Hermon, Sumner triumph

At Ellsworth, Phil Cayford’s two-run double paced Hermon to a 5-2 win over Ellsworth in the opener before Mike Hardy’s two, two-run singles led Sumner to a 9-5 triumph over Ellsworth in the nightcap.

In the opener, Cayford’s double and three errors helped to produce four third-inning runs for Hermon.

Cayford and Reid Frye spaced 10 hits. Cayford also had a single to go with his double while Mike Ketchum and Josh Shorey contributed RBI doubles.

Chad Smith had a triple and two singles for Ellsworth while Justin Gott and Chase Buckingham had three singles and an RBI apiece.

In the nightcap, Hardy had his two-run singles in the three-run fourth inning and four-run sixth inning to break the game open.

Dustin Young had two singles and an RBI for Sumner and Mike Cowperthwaite went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.

Mike Archer had three base hits for Ellsworth and Garrett Hardison had two more. Each drove in a run.

At Madawaska, Kay Gerard smacked a two-run home run to highlight the Owls’ nine-run first inning and added a triple and a single good for two more RBIs.

Sarah Dufour doubled and singled for Madawaska.

Melissa St. Pierre paced Limestone with four singles and three RBIs.

At Jonesport, Crystal Davis drove in four runs with three singles and Abby Alley’s two-run triple sparked a seven-run fourth-inning rally that erased a 5-4 deficit in the nightcap.

Monique Emerson (2 RBIs) and Chelsie Carver (RBI) had two singles each.

Hollan Oliver had a double and three singles with two RBIs for Deer Isle-Stonington. Megan Wiberg and Heather Bray had two singles and an RBI each.

In the opener, Bray knocked in six runs with a three-run homer and two singles and Wiberg delivered five runs with two doubles.

Oliver had a double and three singles and Jenn Eaton contributed a pair of doubles and a single.

Crystal Emerson and Naomi Chandler (RBI) had two singles each for Jonesport-Beals.

At Houlton, junior righthander Katie Frost scattered six hits, striking out nine and not walking anybody, and she helped pace a 13-hit attack with two doubles and a single good for two RBIs.

Kari Redding contributed a double and two singles while Amanda Brown (RBI), Mia Silverthorne (2 RBIs) and Jamie Searles chipped in with two singles each.

Kasey Cleary had two singles for Houlton.

White hurls 5-inning no-hitter

At Mount Desert, righty Kelly White tossed a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking two in five innings of work as the Golden Bucks blanked the Trojans.

Elissa Gordon knocked three singles and drove in two runs for Bucksport. Jessica Taylor knocked in a run to go with three singles.

At Lincoln, senior righthander Kari Vance not only threw a five-inning one-hitter but she also had all three of her team’s hits, a double and two singles good for three RBIs. The Lynx benefited from 12 Central walks.

Vance struck out 10 and walked two. She has 14 of her unbeaten team’s 15 wins.

Jen Allen’s first-inning double was the only hit off Vance.
