Acadia postage stamp to be showcased at Jordan Pond event

BAR HARBOR – The U.S. Postal Service will issue a new international rate postage stamp that honors Acadia National Park.

It is part of the service’s long-term effort to showcase America’s scenic national landmarks. A ceremony marking the stamp’s issue will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Jordan Pond House in the park. The public is welcome to attend, joining members of the advocacy organization Friends of Acadia and Elizabeth Johnson, district manager for the Postal Service in Maine. The stamp will be available at the Bar Harbor post office that day, and will be available May 31 at all other post offices.

Designed by Ether Kessler of Bethesda, Md., the stamp features a color photograph by Carr Clifton of Taylorsville, Calif.

The 60-cent stamp is intended for letters weighing 1 ounce or less being mailed to Mexico or Canada. It is the fourth international philatelic item issued this year. Mount McKinley, Nine Mile Prairie and the Badlands were released earlier as part of the Scenic American Landscape series. Other stamps in the series include Voyageurs National Park aerogramme, Rio Grande, Niagara Falls and Grand Canyon stamps and a Mount Rainier stamped post card. To view the Acadia stamp, visit the “stamp release schedule” site at www.usps.com.

Customers have 30 days to obtain a first date of issue postmark by mail. All orders for the Acadia first day cancellation must be postmarked by June 29. Stamps may be bought at a local post office, placed on an addressed envelope, placed in a larger envelope addressed to: Acadia National Park Stamp, Postmaster, 55 Cottage St., Bar Harbor 04609-9991. The Postal Service will return the envelopes through the mail.
