Girl visiting fatal crash site hit by car

BANGOR – A 16-year-old girl visiting the spot on Interstate 95 where her friend died in a car crash Tuesday narrowly escaped serious injury Wednesday when she accidentally walked in front of speeding traffic.

The name of the girl was not released because she was a juvenile, state police said, but she was released from a Bangor hospital later Wednesday after being treated for minor injuries.

The girl was one of several people in a car that had pulled over in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 about a mile from Exit 44 on ramp. The group then crossed the median strip into the southbound lane, where Selena Meeks, 17, had been killed Tuesday night.

State Trooper Bryan Higgins said that after visiting the area where Meeks died, the girl was walking back to the car and apparently wasn’t paying attention to traffic. She came close to being hit by a truck in the driving lane and was hit by a car in the passing lane. The driver of the red Toyota told police that she couldn’t avoid hitting the girl.

The girl walked into the side of the car by the mirror and cracked the windshield on the passenger side. Despite that, she suffered minor injuries. Higgins said he had been told she suffered a cut to the knee and that when he checked the hospital at 9 p.m., the girl had already been discharged.

The driver of the car, Erica Roy, 20, of Waterville, was not injured and Higgins said no charges would be filed.

Higgins said he came across the accident about 6:10 p.m. after noticing that traffic on the interstate had slowed.

Motorists had reported seeing people stop in the area, near the Hermon town line, where the fatal crash occurred Tuesday night. Meeks was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police, while her two passengers were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. One of the passengers was Meeks’ sister Heather, who remained in good condition at EMMC Wednesday night.

Selena Meeks was heading north Tuesday night when for some reason her car skidded across the passing lane and sped down the grassy median and into the southbound lane, striking the guardrail. It is believed that the car rolled over at least once and that one of the passengers, a young man, was ejected.
