Bangor High School

BANGOR – Bangor High School graduation ceremonies will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at the Bangor Auditorium. The following students have earned the Charles E. French Medals for ranking among the top four grade-point averages in the senior class.

Joshua Brent Johnson is the son of Gail and Brent Johnson and will finish as one of the top four graduates in the Bangor High School Class of 2001. He is a National Merit Scholarship finalist, an AP scholar, a winner of the Superintendent’s Award, and a Bausch & Lomb Science Award recipient. Josh has played an active role in many activities at Bangor High and is the president of the student council. He is also an all-conference first baseman in baseball and an all-state defensive back in football. This year he captained the football, baseball and state champion basketball team. He has been recognized as one of the top scholar-athletes in the state by McDonald’s, the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and the National College Football Hall of Fame. He will attend Princeton University with a concentration in physics.

Shannon Rose Karam, daughter of Rebecca McInnis and Glenn Karam, is one of the top four graduating seniors at Bangor High School. In addition to her academic achievements, she has volunteered her time to the community through student council and National Honor Society and maintains a job throughout most of the school year. She has led the varsity soccer and tennis teams in successful seasons and has been the recipient of math and science department awards. She would like to continue her service to other people, and during her next four years at Tufts University she hopes to pursue her love for the social and physical sciences.

Robert Adam Kinney, son of Lori Marley Kinney, is one of the top four graduating seniors at Bangor High School. Next year, he will attend Bowdoin College. He has been active in the music department all four years of his high school career, playing in the jazz band, concert band and jazz combos, as well as singing with the jazz and chamber choirs. This year, Kinney received both an outstanding musicianship award for woodwinds in his division at the State Instrumental Jazz Competition and the Outstanding Male Vocalist Award at the State Vocal Jazz Festival. He is involved in the school AFS Club, acting as president this year, and on the Bangor High School Science Bowl team, which placed third at the regional competition in February. He will receive the Superintendent’s Award for Achievement this spring.

Samantha Lynne Warner is the daughter of Jerina Warner of Bangor. In addition to being one of the top four graduating seniors of Bangor High School, she was treasurer of the senior class council, the business and circulation editor of the yearbook and a captain of the varsity softball and basketball teams. During the past four years, she has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities such as National Honor Society, Key Club, AIDS committee, and the math team. She has received several academic awards, including the Williams College Award, Superintendent’s Award, and department awards in English and speech. In the fall, Samantha is off to Boston College as a liberal arts major.

Brewer High School

BREWER – Principal Jerry Goss has announced the names of the two students with the highest grade averages in the Class of 2001 at Brewer High School, Lauren Jellison and Craig Allan Frey. Senior essayists are Jonathan Dearborn, Anne McGuire and Frank Breau III.

The senior banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at the Brewer High School gymnasium. The senior prom will be held from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, at the Bangor Civic Center, and graduation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3.

Lauren Jellison, daughter of Earle and Deborah Jellison of Dedham, earned the highest grade point average of her class. Her scholastic achievements and honors include the Maine Principals’ Award, the Maine Scholars Achievement Award, French Language Award, Outstanding Senior Art Award, Marsha Bailey Scholarship, Bangor Art Society Award and the Principals’ Scholarship.

She has been involved in the National Honor Society, varsity soccer, speech team, art club and theater. She has worked both in and out of school as a muralist. She plans to attend the University of Maine where she will major in studio art.

Craig Allan Frey, son of Gus and Barbara Frey Jr. of Brewer, has the second-highest grade point average of his class. His scholastic achievements and honors include the University of Maine Scholar Award, the UMO Pulp and Paper Foundation Scholarship and the Manufacturing Incentive Scholarship by Brewer Automotive Components.

He was involved in the student council for three years, soccer for two years, ice hockey for four years and was elected captain of the hockey team in his senior year.

He also attended the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation Program for Gifted Science and Math Students.

He plans to attend the University of Maine to major in chemical engineering.
