A noontime accident in Hampden on Saturday resulted in minor injuries, but both vehicles involved were demolished.

The crash occurred at 11:55 a.m. on Route 1A in front of Calkins Farm Stand.

According to Patrolman Joel Small of the Hampden Police Department, Karen Perkins, 52, of Hampden was traveling south when she apparently started to turn left to stop at the farm stand. A 2000 Subaru Outback driven by Walter Juskiewicz, 57, of Winterport was traveling north in the opposite direction.

Apparently Juskiewicz had no time to react to the other car’s turning and his vehicle struck the passenger side of Perkins’ car, a 1993 Ford Escort. The force of the crash pinned the car against a telephone pole. Perkins and her 13-year-old son had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The pair were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, and they were treated and released.

Juskiewicz did not require medical attention.

Two hours after the accident, Patrolman Small again was called to the area after an 8-year-old boy was reported bitten by a dog there.

The child’s name was not released although he reportedly is a relative of the Calkins family. He was treated at an area hospital for bite injuries to the nose, eye and lips of his face and was sent home.

The dog, believed to be a 2-year-old Labrador-shepherd mix, is owned by “Burpee” Calkins, Small said. The animal reportedly has had its rabies shot, although no paperwork was produced, according to Small. The dog will be quarantined for 10 days at an Old Town veterinarian’s office before a decision is made on its future, according to Small.

Two men suspected of burglarizing two Coffee Express locations in Bangor were arrested early Saturday morning.

Timothy McCann, 20, and Kurt Calligan, 19, both of Hermon, were charged with burglary. They were released on bail later Saturday from Penobscot County Jail.

Police responded to the State Street store about 3 a.m. after a report of burglary in progress. Officer Robert Angelo pursued on foot two men he saw running from the drive-through.

He chased them through several backyards and over fences, according to the police report. Angelo caught one man and held him down, while he held the other by his T-shirt. That suspect pulled away, leaving behind his ripped shirt and a Nike sneaker.

After Angelo arrested the first man and had placed him in a squad car, police searched the area for the second suspect. Later, they called in a K-9 dog. The dog immediately found the second man in bushes about 10 feet from where police had been standing.

A little before 6 a.m., police were called to the Main Street Coffee Express location for a suspected burglary. Officers found a window had been removed from the frame at the back of the building and pushed aside.

Inside, police found two $1 bills on the floor and the safe open with rolled coins still inside. While a State Street store employee told police that nothing appeared to be missing from that location, no information was available on what might have been take from the Main Street store.

More than $3,000 worth of antique furniture was reported missing Saturday from a storage room at Bangor Mental Health Institute.

The theft was discovered about 4 p.m. when an employee saw that a padlock hasp and screws had been removed from the storage room door.

Officers believe the theft probably took place between 2 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday.
