Lee Academy
LEE – Honor parts for the Class of 2001 have been announced by Headmaster Gary Haynes. Class Night exercises will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 31, and commencement exercises will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, in the Mallett Gymnasium.
Ashley M. Offret, daughter of Dan and Jodi Offeret of Lee, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2001. She will attend the University of Maine where she will study performing arts.
She has been a member of the Math Team throughout her high school career and a three-year member of the National Honor Society. She was also a member of the cheering squad, making captain her senior year.
Her musical accomplishments include membership in the University of Maine orchestra her senior year, member of Lee Academy’s orchestra for four years, and pianist for Lee Academy’s school choir and show choir productions. She has served as a piano instructor for area youth.
Travis Carl McAlpine, son of Carl and Candace McAlpine of Springfield, has been named salutatorian. He will attend the University of Maine where he will major in chemical engineering.
He has received recognition in academic achievement for English, American history, French and formal geometry. He has maintained honor roll status through his high school career, has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years and was awarded the Merit Scholarship in his junior year. A member of the Math Team, he was appointed captain in his senior year.
He has participated in basketball and soccer, making the All-Academic Team in basketball his junior and senior years.
Also receiving honor parts were:
First honor essayist Victoria Hope Nute, daughter of Kris and Tracey Nevells Nute of Lee, will attend the University of Connecticut, where she will major in health systems management.
Second honor essayist Galen Ross Nickerson, son of Shawn and Joyce Nickerson of Drew Plantation, will study elementary education at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Third honor essayist Matthew Osgood Corbin, son of Michael and Robin Corbin of Carroll, will study power engineering at Maine Maritime Academy.
Fourth honor essayist Andrew Orie Ham, son of Daniel and Stephanie Ham of Lee, has been accepted in the nursing program at Husson College.
Fifth honor essayist Jacob Morel Lansky, son of Mitch Lansky and Susan Szwed of Wytopitlock, will attend Bates College. His major is undecided.
Sixth honor essayist Travis Wayne Jones, son of Michael and Brenda Jones of Lee, has received his Class A license his junior year through Region III, and plans to work after high school.
Old Town High School
OLD TOWN – Old Town High School has announced speakers for the Class of 2001 graduation to be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, in MacKenzie Gymnasium at Old Town High School. Essay speakers are as follows.
Valedictorian Lauren Swett, daughter of Paul and Nancy Swett of Old Town, has received the Bausch & Lomb Award, the Science Award, Maine State Principal’s Award and the Citizenship Award.
She was chosen as a Most Promising Scholar, a Maine Scholar and has received her academic letter. She was a National Merit finalist, a Dirigo Girls State delegate, and was in Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
She was captain of the Math Team and the Envirothon Team, a member of the field hockey team, the JETS Team, the Physics Club and the National Honor Society.
She will attend the University of Maine and study civil engineering.
Salutatorian Jennifer Avery is the daughter of Gary and Dianne Avery of Stillwater.
She was chosen as a Maine Scholar, a Girls State delegate, and received her academic letter. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the JETS Team, Physics Club, Key Club, Renaissance Club, band, Jazz Ensemble and the basketball team.
She will attend the University of Maine and study elementary education.
Essayist Ian Wilbur is the son of Fernald and Jackie Wilbur of Milford. He has been president of his class for the past two years. He was a member of the golf team, baseball team and was involved with the Every 15 Minutes Program.’ He has served on the Student Council and school newspaper and was a member of the yearbook staff.
He will attend the New England School of Broadcasting to study broadcast journalism.
Essayist David Petrell is the son of Linda Petrell of Milford.
He has received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award, Renaissance Student Achievement Award, and his academic letter and pin.
He is a member of the National Honor Society, participated in the Young America’s Cup, was a Dirigo Boys State alternate and an active participant in volunteer construction projects in the New England area.
He will attend Eastern Maine Technical College and study computer-aided drafting and design.
Bangor Christian Schools
Dr. Richard Bach, principal of Bangor Christian Schools, has announced the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2001. Graduation and baccalaureate ceremonies will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 8, in the Bangor Baptist Church auditorium.
Valedictorian Kathy Fortier is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fortier of Ellsworth. She will attend Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., where she will pursue a career as an educator.
She has participated in many activities during her high school years at Bangor Christian including varsity cheering, varsity soccer and the drama club. She was class secretary-treasurer for four years, a member of the National Honor Society, co-editor of Wide Horizons, and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes where she was secretary-treasurer and song leader.
She was a member of her class prayer group and of the math team. She also has a special gift in music where she uses her talent in the school choral ensemble and accompanying on the piano in school and in her church.
Salutatorian Lisa Phinney is the daughter Mr. and Mrs. James Phinney of Brewer. She plans to attend Clearwater Christian College in Clearwater, Fla., where she will major in pre-med and minor in Bible and missions.
She has been class president all four years of high school and a member of the basketball and softball teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the math team and yearbook layout editor.
Her love of science has brought state science fair awards and the Kodak Young Leader award and she was awarded the Maine Principal’s Award. Along with leading missions and Bible study clubs, she is active in her church missions program, traveling to Israel and Russia.
