Ashland Community High School

ASHLAND – Janice DeLong, principal of Ashland Community High School, has announced the honors parts for the Class of 2001.

Valedictorian is Randall Perry, son of Stanley and Janet Perry of Ashland. Perry is an Eagle Scout, National Honor Society vice president, member of the Future Farmers of America, and a volunteer referee and umpire for the Ashland Recreation Department. He was a Boys State representative his junior year and has been involved with Model State Legislature throughout high school. He has lettered in basketball, baseball and soccer. Perry will attend the University of Maine and has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Salutatorian is Andrea Millett, daughter of Mike and Elaine Millett of Ashland. President of National Honor Society and class treasurer of her junior and senior years, Millett has been in the Future Farmers of America holding positions of secretary, reporter and treasurer for three years, and has lettered in basketball, soccer and softball. She was a participant in Model State Legislature and band through four years of high school, and attended Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp since eighth grade. Millett has been on the Student Leadership Team and in Youth Ministry for four years, and on the Governor’s Advisory Council while a member of the Communities for Children for Youth representative her sophomore year. She has been accepted to the physical therapy program at Husson College.

First essayist is Matt Raymond, son of Patrick and Cheryl Raymond of Portage. Raymond has been class president for the past two years and is treasurer of the National Honor Society and a peer tutor. He was a committee chair for three of his four years in Model State Legislature. Raymond was a member of the band and Bodacious Brass Band through his junior year, as first trumpet for two years and treasurer his junior year. A member of Future Farmers of America, Raymond has been chapter president his junior and senior years, lettered in soccer, holds a first degree black belt in karate, has been recognized in Who’s Who Among American High School Students and received the All American Scholar Award all four years of high school. Raymond will enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation.

Second essayist is Leslie Bessey, daughter of Arthur and Heather Bessey of Ashland. As a senior, Bessey serves on the Student Council, is captain of the soccer team, a peer tutor, performed in the school musical production, and was volunteer assistant swim team coach and sixth-grade helper and editor of the 2001 yearbook. She is a member of the Future Farmers of America and the National Honor Society, has played in the band four years and in the Bodacious Brass Band for two years. She lettered in basketball, softball and soccer, and was a Special Olympic volunteer and Girl Scout for two years and taught at vacation Bible camp for three years. Bessey has been a participant in the Model State Legislature, French club, D.A.R.E. role model project, Communities for Children, Student Leadership Team, assisted with the Little Miss Ashland Pageant and Ashland Daze Carnival for Kids, and traveled to England and France while in high school. Bessey will attend the University of Maine at Farmington as an education major.

Leavitt Area High School

TURNER – The Class of 2001 graduation will be at 7 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the Leavitt Gymnasium.

Valedictorian Jonathan Bennett is a member of the National Honor Society and was awarded the Maine Junior Scholars Award. A participant in track and field, cross-country and basketball, Bennett is a KVAC Academic Athlete. He is vice president of student government and treasurer of the Class of 2001, vice president of the S.T.A.R.S. community service group, and a home care and hospice volunteer. He has participated in the National Junior Classical League and Odyssey of the Mind.

Salutatorian Ashleigh Hill has been involved in Model State Legislature, Student Leadership Team, S.T.A.R.S. community service group and the National Honor Society. Hill attended the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership seminar her sophomore year as a student ambassador. She will attend Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I., majoring in baking and pastry arts.

The honor essay will be presented by Dana Duncan and the honor oration will be presented by Robert Maher. Others in the top 11 are Katrina Beeckel, Jonathan Bussiere, Brian Crabtree, Krista Hopkins, Pamela Morency and Marcie Smith. Mark Gustafson, an exchange student, will be unable to attend graduation but is among the top 11 of the class.
