CALAIS – A 21-year-old Calais man has been charged with terrorizing and assault in connection with an incident Sunday at one of the city’s basketball courts.

In an unrelated matter, a 60-year-old East Machias man was charged with assault in connection with an incident involving his girlfriend.

The men are expected to appear in 4th District Court in Calais on June 5.

Sgt. David Randall said that around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Curtis Cook was arrested at the basketball court in Milltown, about two miles north of the city’s downtown.

Randall said a dispute over who had the right to use the court arose between Cook and some juveniles. He said Cook allegedly assaulted one juvenile and terrorized two others. He said the terrorizing involved alleged verbal threats.

The sergeant would not give any details, nor would he identify the juveniles, but said one of the juveniles ran to the nearby Clark’s Variety Store and called police.

Cook was taken to the Washington County Jail in Machias, where he was later released on bail.

Dennis Guptill, 60, was charged with assault as a result of an incident at 47 Stillson St.

The sergeant said Guptill lives with his girlfriend on Stillson Street. He said an altercation allegedly erupted on Friday night. “The assault consisted of a shove during an argument,” the sergeant said. He said Earle did not require any medical attention.

Correction: Because of a computer glitch, some editions Thursday carried a brief story that originally ran in April about charges involving two Washington County men. While the original story was correct, charges against one of the men, Dennis Guptill, 59, of East Machias have been dropped since the news story appeared April 24. After “reviewing the evidence, the assistant district attorney did not authorize a complaint,” said Calais Police Chief Michael Milburn on Thursday. The NEWS regrets the error.
