Fireworks from car alert bicycle cops Two men summoned in Bangor incident

An early mobile fireworks display prompted the Bangor police to summon two of four people inside a car late Wednesday night.

Officers Chad Foley and George Spencer were on bike patrol in the area of York and Pine streets shortly before midnight when they heard popping sounds. Foley said it sounded like a vehicle running over a bottle.

Then both officers saw sparks, as a passenger in the car threw an object out the window. A trail of sparks followed the object as it hit the ground, then exploded, Spencer reported. Foley stopped the car and spoke to passenger Marc A. Umphrey, 25, of Hudson, who handed over the remainder of the fireworks, four M-2000s. Umphrey faces a charge of unlawful possession of fireworks.

Searching the car, a 1995 Dodge Neon, police didn’t come up with any other contraband. But Spencer reported finding a small bag of marijuana in the left lower pants pocket of the driver, identified as Ryan E. Russell, 21, of Bangor. Russell was charged with possession of marijuana.

While on bike patrol in the area of Second Street park Wednesday night, two Bangor police officers spotted a man falling down an embankment near some apartments.

Officers George Spencer and Chad Foley followed the man, who ran behind two apartments and continued toward Cedar Street even though the police identified themselves and told him to stop and show his hands.

The officers separated and rode in opposite directions, cornering the man and prompting him to give up. The man was identified as Brock Cochran, 23, of Bangor. A check with dispatch revealed that Cochran was wanted on a warrant. He was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail.
