BANGOR – A Mexican national who was caught three times in 1998 for entering the United States illegally at an Arizona border crossing was sentenced to time served Thursday after he was discovered in the Washington County town of Harrington.
Juan Horacio Reyes-Martinez, 20, was ordered to complete two years of supervised release after being convicted of possession of a false immigration document. The sentencing took place at U.S. District Court in Bangor. U.S. District Judge George Z. Singal presided.
According to court papers, officials at the Calais border crossing got a tip that Reyes-Martinez was in this country illegally, so they went to Harrington on March 8 and located the Mexican man. Reyes-Martinez produced “what appeared to be a resident alien card,” a court document states.
The card number registered as invalid after it was checked in a computer database for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Reyes-Martinez admitted he had purchased the false card for $70 in Mexico and “admitted he had no legal right to be in the United States,” a court document states.
He was arrested that day and incarcerated.
Reyes-Martinez is scheduled to be turned over to INS officials for voluntary departure to Mexico.
