BIDDEFORD – Maine Energy Recovery Co. may be fined for the first time because of an odor complaint.

City officials established an odor-control measure last year for the company’s trash-burning plant. It allows officials to rate odors on a scale from one to eight, with a rating of three or more considered a violation.

The plant rated a 3.5 Thursday after residents of Saco Island complained about the smell.

City officials planned to meet Friday to discuss the fine.

The company installed a $3.5 million odor-control system earlier this year because the plant has had chronic odor problems.
