Until we got into shaking our family trees, most of us probably couldn’t have come up with a Delano descendant except for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose mother was a Delano.
But it turns out that lots of people have Delano ancestry, especially if their forebears trace back to the Plymouth Colony.
Philippe De La Noye, or Philip Delano, arrived on the Fortune in 1621, and settled in Duxbury, Mass. You also may have heard of Delano Park near Portland Head, Delano Cove northwest of Friendship, and Delano Hall at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.
Thomas and Sarah Delano settled in the Portland area in 1740, and their son Barzillai was the third keeper of the Portland Head Light. Another family, Jonathan and Ruth Delano, and some of their sons, were keepers at Seguin Island Light off Georgetown.
A Massachusetts-based society known as Delano Kindred will hold a Delano reunion Aug. 3-4 at New Meadows Inn in West Bath. Activities will include a buffet, craft show and exhibits on Friday evening. Saturday events will include an afternoon boat trip to Seguin Island Light or a tour of Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. The annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday morning.
Those interested in attending should contact George DeLano at 521 Buffer Drive, Virgina Beach, VA 23462; telephone (757) 497-6126.
A search for Delano information on the Internet took me to the Delano Kindred site, www.delanoye.org, and also to a genealogy.com listing for Famous Family Trees, at www.genealogy.com/famousfolks/index.html.
I found: Abigail Adams, John Quincy Adams, John Alden, Louisa May Alcott, Clara Barton, Daniel Boone, Lizzie Borden, George Bush, Davy Crockett, Bing Crosby, Walt Disney, Wyatt Earp, Benjamin Franklin, Clark Gable, Tom Hanks, Patrick Henry, Wild Bill Hickock, Jesse James, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Paul Lynde, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Dolley Madison, Rebecca Nurse, Donna Reed, Betsy Ross, Rudolph Valentino, George Washington, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tennessee Williams and Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
I enjoyed this site, although I would point out that Prince Charles’ lineage isn’t carried out many generations. By the way, author Laura Ingalls Wilder is the one listed on the site with the Delano ancestry.
A Michaud Family Reunion will be held Aug. 18-19 at the senior high school, Cite des Jeunes AM Sormany, in Edmundston, New Brunswick, across the river from Madawaska. Reservations are required if you want the meals on Aug. 18.
The Association des Familles Michaud is sponsoring the reunion for descendants of immigrant ancestor Pierre Micheau and wife Marie Ancelin. Registration is at 10 a.m. Aug. 18. The 1 p.m. program will include a talk on the history of Madawaska by Nicole Lang, and a talk on the arrival of the first Michauds by Guy Michaud.
From 3 to 6 p.m., participants will visit sites on their own, choosing from among several historical sites in the area.
You may download the bilingual registration form from the Web at www.genealogie.org/famille/michaud/page1a.html.; or e-mail eichajaa@nbnet.nb.ca; or call Jean-Claude Michaud at (506) 735-8358, or James A. Michaud at (506) 473-1291. I would add that I find this to be a very informative Web site.
The Robert Dunbar Family Association will hold a reunion on July 28 at the Saugus Iron Works National Park in Saugus, Mass. Details to follow. Robert and Rose Dunbar came from Scotland.
If you have family reunion information to share, send it along as far in advance as possible, and we’ll print it here.
