DEER ISLE – Eric Ray pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking none, to help second-seeded Deer Isle-Stonington post a 4-0 high school baseball playoff victory over No. 7 Shead of Eastport on Wednesday.

Ray also stroked a two-run triple to cap a four-run sixth inning that gave the Mariners all the runs they would need.

Josh Bolton and Daryl Dunham drove in Deer Isle-Stonington’s other runs with an RBI single each.

Shead was led by Ben Maloney and Gerald Holmes, who each singled. Maloney scattered six hits in a losing effort.

At Presque Isle, Leon Russell scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on an error as the Bulldogs of Fairfield moved on.

Mike Mesteri nailed a two-run triple for Lawrence. Russell also tallied a double. Berry Quirion had three singles and drove in two runs. Justin McCluskey hit a two-run double.

Josh Gale knocked a two-run double for the Wildcats.

At Orono, Bo Thomas smacked a two-run homer and two doubles and drove in four runs to propel the No. 6 Red Riots to a second-round preliminary win.

Daryl Watson and Derek Sinclair added a double, two singles and two RBIs apiece for Orono while Pat Skall rapped three singles and scored twice.

Greg Harjula doubled and singled for No. 11 Rockland. Parker Tootil singled twice and knocked in a run.

At Woodland, Adrian Arsenault nailed a two-run single to spark a four-run sixth that put the Devils ahead for good.

The game was played at Woodland due to water on the Calais field.

Andy Frost hit a double and a single for Calais. Joe Footer and Scott McDonald each hit an RBI single. Nathan Pelletier hit an RBI triple, and Chris La Pointe added a single.

Harry Fickett knocked in three runs on a single for the Knights of Harrington. Doug Sawyer knocked a two run double, Jordan Kneeland had two singles, Gene Steward nailed an RBI single, and Sean Reynolds hit a triple.

Ashley Cluff singled twice, while Rebecca Stevens and Alex Waring each singled and had an RBI for John Bapst of Bangor.

Holly Tripp collected three singles and an RBI for Ellsworth while Krystal Roberts singled twice behind loser Malory Patten.

Woodward helped her cause at the plate with three singles. Liz Thompson hit four singles and drove in three runs.

Sarah Snider nailed two singles and drove a run home for the Knights. Becky Robitaille had three singles and two RBIs.

At Ashland, Leslie Bessey’s two-run single sparked the No. 6 Hornets to surge back from an early 9-0 deficit and beat the No. 14 Bulldogs.

Amanda Martin was strong in the circle, pitching 5? innings of three-hit ball, holding Machias to one earned run after the second inning.

Amber Smith hit two singles for Ashland. Bessey had three RBIs and two singles overall. Karen Spooner singled twice and knocked in two runs.

Tracy Guptil had two singles and an RBI for Machias. Amanda Guerra had a single and stole three bases.

Lyons also had a triple, a double, and another single while driving in five runs as the No. 5 Warriors eliminated the No. 12 Panthers of Mars Hill.

Kristi Brooker hit two doubles and two singles, driving in three runs. Rhonda Chambers smacked two doubles, a single and knocked in three runs. Michelle Boutilier had four singles.

Gabrielle Smith led Central Aroostook with two doubles, a single and three RBIs. Jocelyn Carvell had two doubles, two singles, and three RBIs.
