Steins propel ‘Jammers to crown Mount Ararat, George Stevens also annex Eastern Maine championships

ORONO – Just as she is on the tennis court, Laura Stein is on the sidelines: a cheering, pacing, clapping bundle of nerves.

The Camden Hills freshman had breezed through her first singles match at Wednesday’s Eastern Maine Class B team tennis finals, but with older sister Rebecca in a decisive match against Ellsworth’s May Chan, Laura Stein was anything but relaxed.

As Laura Stein shouted encouragement, Rebecca Stein rallied in the second set of the match, and her, plus a close match in third singles, boosted the Windjammers to their first Eastern Maine Class B championship since 1995.

In Class C, No. 5 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill got wins at second and third singles and swept the doubles from No. 6 Orono for the Eagles’ first Eastern Maine title.

No. 2 Mount Ararat of Topsham also earned its first trip to the Class A state championships with a 3-2 victory over rival No. 1 Brunswick.

The three Eastern Maine champions will face the Western Maine champs for the state titles in Classes A, B and C Saturday at Deering Oaks in Portland.

Match times are 9 a.m. for Class B, 11:30 a.m. for Class A, and 2:30 p.m. for Class C.

In Class B, the No. 2 Windjammers emerged with a 15-0 record in a battle of undefeated teams. The No. 1 Eagles, who had won the past four EM titles, finish at 14-1.

Laura Stein had won her match over Megan Collins 6-0, 6-0, and the Eagles had won both doubles matches, which gave Ellsworth a 2-1 lead. Camden Hills’ third singles player Lauren Withey held off Monica Gardner 6-2, 6-2 and tied the match for the Windjammers with Rebecca Stein and Ellsworth’s May Chan still on the court.

Rebecca Stein took the opening set 6-3 but ran into trouble early in the second as Chan jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to some well-placed lobs.

“Mentally I was telling myself to pick it up,” Chan said of her comeback. “I noticed that she would come up to the net and she was good there, so I decided to lob her. She got some, but I felt I should lob her more.”

But Rebecca Stein battled back to tie it at 3-3, Chan took the next two games, and Stein won three in a row for the 7-5 win.

The two girls were playing on the court next to Withey and Gardner, so when Withey won Rebecca Stein knew the Eastern Maine title would come down to her match.

“It made me a bit more nervous, but I knew it was down to Lauren and I regardless. When Lauren went up 5-2 I knew it was all up to me,” Rebecca Stein said.

Withey was up 3-2 in the second set when she too ran into problems. She was ahead 40-30 when Gardner came back for deuce – the first of 11 in the game. Finally, after a stretch of rallies, double faults and cross-court smashes, Withey won the game when Gardner returned a shot into the net. Withey took the final two games of the match.

“I was telling myself to just win the two points, and I kept getting the first one but missing the second one,” Withey said. “She wasn’t making any mistakes on the ad-in points for me and finally she ended up making a mistake. But that was a big game. I thought I could get her after that.”

Ellsworth’s Kate Beal and Meghan Pelletier beat Karinna Russo and Leah Gonella of Camden Hills 6-4, 6-2. In the second doubles, Cherry Gammelin and Sarah Staples defeated Christine DeMichele and Emily O’Connor 6-2, 6-1.

In Class C, the Eagles (10-6) earned the win thanks to victories and second and third singles and the doubles matches.

“I knew we had to get two wins out of the doubles in order to have a chance to beat them,” GSA coach Tim Farrar said.

Phoebe Markle defeated Kristina Wihbey 6-1, 6-2 at second singles and Courtney Lawsing topped Alyssa Weggler 6-1, 6-4 at second singles.

In the doubles, Kirsten Reuter and Catherine Weiss held off Jessica Wagner and Channa Pixley 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Anne Marie Napolitano and Alex Hemmerly-Brown got a 6-1, 6-1 win at second doubles over Sophie Gray and Sabina Pendse.

Markle’s match score was deceiving – Wihbey took her to deuce in the first game and five more times in the match.

“While warming up I saw that she was basically consistent but that she wasn’t hitting very hard,” Markle said. “I just wanted to move her around and try to stay in a volley with her.”

First-singles player Robin Sewall notched Orono’s lone win, beating Katie Wise 6-1, 7-5.

Sewall was down 3-0 in the second set and slowly worked her way back into the match against Wise, who rolled her right ankle last week.

“Coming back from being down like that is really something,” said Orono coach Dean Armstrong, whose Red Riots finish at 10-6. “She kept the ball in play and she didn’t let her emotions get to her.”

He was also pleased with Weggler’s effort. It was just the second singles match ever for Weggler, who replaced the injured Audrey Co and has only been playing for six weeks.

In Class A, Mount Ararat’s third singles player Rebecca Culver won the decisive match for the Eagles, beating Brunswick’s Jen Baum 6-1, 6-1 and breaking a 2-2 tie for the win. Mount Ararat (14-1) swept the singles with Molly Gilbride winning at first singles over Caitlin Erhard 6-1, 6-0 and Hannah Levesque taking the second singles 6-0, 6-1.

The Dragons (13-2) won the doubles, with twin sisters Sara and Juliet Nicita winning the first doubles 6-1, 6-0 over Katie Allen and Georgia Ahlers 6-1, 6-0. Katie Guptill and Diana Cornell teamed up to defeat Stephanie Nesbitt and Marcie Fournier 6-2, 6-1.
