BANGOR – Jen Jimmo registered another outstanding pitching performance, but after Thursday’s 7-1 victory over Hampden, the Bangor High junior seemed more eager to credit the Rams’ offense for the win.
Jimmo had two singles for No. 1 Bangor in the Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal against the No. 8 Broncos, and pitched a two-hitter as the Rams earned a berth in the semifinals.
“I just think we came ready to hit today,” Jimmo said. “We were all up and that helped a lot.”
Bangor, now 15-2, will face No. 4 No. 4 Lawrence of Fairfield in the semis Saturday at the Bangor High field.
Hampden closes its season with an 11-7 mark, one of the best seasons ever for the program.
Bangor stroked nine hits and Jimmo gave up two, although the Rams allowed four more baserunners because of errors. She struck out two and walked none.
Having faced the Broncos twice this season, Jimmo knew exactly what she wanted to throw.
“Rises, some fastballs and a couple of changes,” said Jimmo, who was the game’s only repeat hitter.
Hampden took an early lead thanks to an RBI single by Emmy Russell that scored Jamie Wells in the first, but Bangor rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Rams added two more runs in the third and one each in the fifth and the sixth.
In the first inning, Jimmo hit a one-out line drive single and got to second when Rachael Dube, the next batter, reached on an error.
Megan Huckins followed by lining an 0-2 dropball into center field. The triple plated both Jimmo and Dube.
“I just hit it,” said Huckins, who drove in her third run of the game on a groundout in the third. “We had to have our intensity up the whole game. We had to break out the bats.”
Huckins scored on an overthrow to first base on an Amanda Johnson hit. Johnson added an RBI single in the fifth.
Dube finished with three runs scored. Leadoff batter Kerri Tuck went 0-for-3 before hitting a double in the sixth that scored Courtney Smith.
Eight of Bangor’s nine batters had at least one hit.
“They got the hits when they had baserunners in scoring position,” said Hampden coach Rodney Wells, who is Jamie’s father. “We had people in scoring position but we didn’t get the hits. That was the difference today, and I knew that was going to be the difference.”
Jamie Wells, who was pitching with an injured right arm, fanned four and walked none. She also singled in the fifth inning.
Only one of Bangor’s runs was earned.
The Hampden senior wrapped up her stellar career with a 10-7 record.
