Raiders rally by Calais

EAST MACHIAS – Josh Ramsdell jolted a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh and Adam Demarest followed with a game-winning solo shot as Washington Academy posted a 14-13 win over Calais in an Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinal baseball game on Thursday.

The Raiders’ rally answered an eight-run seventh-inning flurry by the Blue Devils. Seven of the Raiders’ 12 hits were home runs.

Demarest also nailed a three-run double. Steve Colbeth hit a pair of homers, Ramsdell added another earlier in the contest, and Ryan Maker belted a homer. All the homers were solo shots, with the exception of Ramsdell’s two-run blast.

No. 5 Calais was sparked by Scott McDonald, who knocked in four runs on two doubles and a single. Joe Footer doubled, singled and had four RBIs, while Adam Arsenault homered and doubled.

At Lincoln, Andy McLellan lined a double to right-center with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the No. 3 Lynx the victory over the 14th-seeded Vikings.

Andrew Kites opened the Mattanawcook seventh with a single, Matt Malone followed with a double and Fred Pete was walked intentionally to set up the game-winning hit.

Freshman Steven Whitney scattered six hits and allowed one run in five-plus innings of relief, striking out five and walking two. Kites singled three times for the Lynx, Malone doubled and singled, and Pete provided a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.

Ben Relyea doubled and singled for Searsport, while Nick Dakin roped a two-run double and Marcus Quisenberry hit an RBI single.

At Hodgdon, the No. 7 Pandas outhit the No. 2 Hawks 15-4 and won a game of surges by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Lee led 5-0 before Hodgdon scored six straight runs to take a 6-5 lead after six innings. Matt Corbin hit a triple and two singles and Nate Dow doubled and singled for the Pandas. Blair Emery, Frank Severance and Jeremy Ham added two singles apiece.

Adam Bither singled in a run for the Hawks.

At Blue Hill, Chris Candage had a single, double and knocked in a run to lead the No. 1 Eagles over the No. 9 Red Devils of Corinth.

At Waterville, Brooks Paradis, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, scored the game-winner on a wild pitch as the top-seeded Panthers escaped with their 13th straight win.

Righty Josh Dubay improved his record to 8-0. He allowed just two earned runs, striking out seven and walking three.

Kevin O’Hier had a pair of singles and scored two runs for the Purple Panthers.

Ben Clark led the No. 8 Indians’ attack by going 3 for 4 with a double and two singles. Shawn Tidwell hit two singles. Old Town took advantage of six Waterville errors to come back from down 8-3 and tie the score in the top of the seventh.

At Bucksport, a four-run sixth-inning rally by Winslow and a clutch relief pitching effort from Kris Langlais helped the Black Raiders hold off the Golden Bucks.

A bases-loaded walk by Chris McCabe started the sixth-inning scoring before Wes Zemrak hit a one-out, two-run single and Brad Carey followed with an RBI single as Winslow went from a run down to two runs ahead.

After Bucksport’s Chris McHale led off the seventh with a single and the next two batters walked to load the bases, Langlais came in and escaped the jam with a strikeout and two fielder’s choice groundouts.

Carey hit three singles and McCabe doubled and singled to pace Winslow. Jon Sirus and Ricky Vigue each singled twice.

Justin Barnes and Jason Harvey contributed an RBI single apiece for the Golden Bucks, who failed to make the EM final for the first time in six years.

Kevin Herbig had three singles and a double for Belfast. Steve Johnson nailed two singles.

At Van Buren, Matthew Gagnon tied the game in the sixth when he scored from third base on an error, and Eric Ayotte’s double plated Sean Violette for the winning run as the No. 1 Crusaders got by the No. 8 Cougars.

Eric Ayotte finished with three doubles and four RBIs. Violette doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs. Phil Smith and Stacy Ayotte each hit two singles. Smith and Zach Cote combined for 15 strikeouts.

Chris Robinson singled twice and had two RBIs for Katahdin of Sherman Station. Doug Rodgerson drove in two runs on a double and a single. Mike Lane singled twice.

At Machias, Ed St. Pierre belted a three-run home run and Kevin Loughlin smacked a two-run shot to highlight a 13-run second inning that carried the No. 4 Bulldogs to victory over the No. 5 Panthers.

Jarad Day and Jeff Copp combined on a four-hitter and were backed by a 24-hit onslaught. Loughlin also hit a three-run homer in the third inning and had two other singles en route to six RBIs on the day.

St. Pierre (4 RBIs) added a double and a single to his homer while Day hit a double and two singles. Eric Millay (3 RBIs), Matt Cobb, Todd Stevens and Micah Hall contributed two singles apiece.

Daniel Codrey hit a three-run home run and Kyle Larrabee hit an RBI single for Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.

Mainville’s only non-strikeout out came on a groundout. Alycia Pushard had a two-run homer and a single for Erskine. Cally Thomas went just 1-for-3, but the lone hit was a three-run homer. Jen Tibbetts had a double and a single.
