SOUTH PORTLAND – A former president of the state chapter of the NAACP was charged with aggravated assault following what South Portland police describe as an altercation stemming from “road rage.”
Gerald Talbot and another motorist got into an argument while driving near the Maine Mall and the other motorist apparently followed Talbot into the mall parking lot, where a scuffle erupted, police said.
Talbot, 69, wielded a Swiss-army pocketknife during the confrontation, causing an injury to the neck of Lee Sotiropoulos, 21, of Falmouth, police said. The injury did not require stitches, police said.
Both Talbot and Sotiropoulos were charged in the incident. The more serious charge stemmed from Talbot’s wielding of the knife, police said.
Talbot was Maine’s first black legislator, as well as a past officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
