MACHIAS – If it takes a community to raise a child, the children of Machias are fortunate indeed, according to a counselor at the Rose M. Gaffney Elementary School.

Michael Rottersman said the school’s June 5 career day at the University of Maine at Machias was a great success, thanks to a grant from Machias Savings Bank and 11 presenters.

Joan Roberts, a graduate of Rose Gaffney who has her own career-counseling business in Bangor, gave the keynote address.

Other Rose Gaffney graduates included David Whitney, the owner of Whitney’s Tool Shed; Steve Richardson, branch manager of Machias Savings Bank; Kelly Richards, owner of Tangles Hair Salon; and Sandy Seamans, registered nurse.

The half-day workshop also included sessions on computer technology, marine biology, law enforcement, wildlife biology, counseling, marine patrol, carpentry-construction, culinary arts and business.
