BURNHAM – Maine State Police arrested a man for terrorizing Saturday night just hours after he was shot in the arm by his father.

Joseph Chamberlain, 35, of Woonsocket, R.I., was wounded in the right arm by a .22-caliber handgun after his father warned him that he had a gun and had asked him to leave his Young Avenue home, according to state police spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The younger Chamberlain had arrived at Daniel Chamberlain’s home shortly after midnight from Rhode Island and attempted to gain entry. The elder Chamberlain, 57, normally lives alone, McCausland said, but had offered shelter to his son’s ex-girlfriend. McCausland did not release her name.

According to McCausland, there is a history of violence between the son and the woman.

Joseph Chamberlain smashed a window in the door of the home, which is in a remote area of town, and then tossed a portable generator at the door. The door was damaged, but the son did not gain entry or make contact with the woman, McCausland said.

After the son refused to leave, the father fired a shot and hit his son in the arm.

Joseph Chamberlain drove off.

Details after that were unclear, McCausland said, but the son showed up at a truck stop and apparently someone there noticed his injury and contacted the Fairfield Police Department.

Chamberlain ended up at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, where he was charged, arrested and was under police guard there by Trooper Scott Bryant.

Bail had been set at $10,000 cash. McCausland didn’t know if Chamberlain was still in custody late Sunday.
