Thomas sparks Riots with 3 hits

ORONO – Bo Thomas singled, doubled, homered, and drove in two runs to help the No. 6 Orono Red Riots beat the No. 7 Winslow Black Raiders in an Eastern Maine Class B baseball semifinal Saturday.

The Red Riots advanced to Tuesday’s 3 p.m. final against John Bapst at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Orono blew open a one-run game with a five-run sixth-inning flurry.

Freshman cleanup hitter Ryan Levesque drove in three more runs on a double and a single, while Mike Merritt singled twice, Daryl Watson drilled a two-run double and Pat Skall rapped an RBI single. Watson scattered eight hits, striking out seven and walking none.

Brad Carey smacked a solo home run and two singles and Wes Zemrak hit a solo homer of his own for the Black Raiders.

At Blue Hill, Baren Yurchick fanned six and walked three in a five-inning two-hitter to power the No. 1 Eagles past the No. 4 Raiders.

Hans Reuter led George Stevens with three RBIs on a double and a single. Travis Bannister singled twice and drove in a run. Nick Henry added two singles. The Eagles also took advantage of seven walks.

Nick Reynolds doubled for Washington Academy of East Machias and Adam Demarest singled.

At Lincoln, Delany Wilkes belted four singles to lead No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy over No. 7 Lee Academy in an Eastern Maine semifinal.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mike Springer singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Kites and was then drove in on a Wilkes single to score the game-wining run for the Lynx .

Jeremy Ham and Frank Severance each doubled twice with an RBI for the Pandas.

At Deer Isle, Alvin Beal crushed a two-run home run in the in the third inning to lead No. 3 Jonesport-Beals over No. 2 Deer Isle-Stonington in an Eastern Maine Class D semifinal.

Darren Kelley ripped two singles with two RBIs for the Royals while D.R. Alley also hit two singles.

Josh Bolton cracked a three-run home run as Eric Ray doubled and singled with an RBI and Eric Robbins nailed an RBI single for the Mariners.

At Van Buren, Zac Cote ended the game on the 10-run rule by jolting a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth as the top-seeded Crusaders dispatched No. 4 Machias.

Cote also doubled, singled and walked, and finished with five RBIs. Eric Ayotte contributed three singles and drove in two runs, Stacy Ayotte drove in five more with a three-run homer and three singles and Tyler Hews and Jeremy Chasse stroked two singles apiece.

Kevin Loughlin led the Bulldogs with a solo homer and a two-run double.

At South China, Katie Mainville struck out eight and allowed only one hit to lead No. 1 Erskine Academy over No. 4 Belfast in an Eastern Maine Class B semifinal.

Alicia Pushard notched two doubles with four RBIs for the Eagles while both Linda Horak and Jen Tibbetts doubled with an RBI.

Morgan Crandall doubled for the Lions.

At Calais, Katie Frost’s third single of the game plated Kari Redding to end the long contest.

With two outs in the 13th, Redding walked, took third on Crystal Martin’s single, and scored when Frost rapped a ball through the hole between shortstop and third base.

Frost earned the win for the top-ranked Blue Devils, striking out 11, walking four while giving up only five hits. Martin had two singles, and Mia Silverthorne also had a single.

The No. 5 Knights of Harrington nearly iced the game themselves in the top of the seventh.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Frost threw a pitch past catcher Martin. Martin raced back to get the ball and fired back to Frost covering the plate. She put the tag on Becky Robitaille trying to score from third.

Knights pitcher Ashley Woodward, who struck out 16 and walked one, posted a pair of singles, and Liz Thompson, Robitaille, and Jen Strout had one each.

At Sherman Station, the No. 1 Cougars outhit the No. 4 Tigers 13-5 en route to the win.

Morgan Anderson singled twice and had two RBIs, while Lacey Willette doubled and singled for two RBIs. Michaelene Duffy and Lindsay Duffy-Stanley each hit two singles. Scarlet McAvoy doubled and singled.

Keely Sayers led Fort Fairfield with two singles. Terri Lynch and Maranda Butler each scored a run on an error.

At St. Agatha, Danielle Miller reached base on an error in the eighth inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored the winning run on the ensuing throwing error as No. 3 Bangor Christian knocked off No. 2 Wisdom in an Eastern Maine Class D semifinal.

Renee Mick doubled and singled with an RBI for the Patriots while Nicole Pelletier ripped a double with an RBI.

Crista Lizotte notched a triple and two singles with two RBIs as Kelly Cyr doubled for the Pioneers.
