N.H. bumps Brunswick off retirement town throne

HANOVER, N.H. – Money magazine has named Hanover the best place in New England to retire, replacing Brunswick, Maine, which took the region’s top spot last year.

In its annual list, the magazine said Hanover was picked because of good home values, low property taxes, cultural attractions, access to a leading university and nearby airports, and good medical care.

Last year, the top ranking for New England went to Brunswick. Money called Brunswick “a small, smart, culturally vibrant New England town.”

In its July issue, the magazine wrote that in Hanover, home of Dartmouth College, retirees will “find a tight-knit community devoted to maintaining its rural New England character – a place where retirement means activity.”

Money magazine also gave Hanover high marks for opportunities for continuing education and its strong housing market.

For other parts of the country, the magazine named Eugene, Ore., best in the Northwest; Tucson, Ariz., for the Southwest; Escondido, Calif., for the West; Oxford, Miss., for the South; and Edisto and Seabrook Islands, S.C., in the Southeast.
