Stonington firefighters extinguish boat blaze

STONINGTON – Quick action by firefighters and boatyard workers helped to save a fishing boat that caught fire while undergoing repairs at a local boatyard.

Workers at Billings Diesel and Marine were using a torch to remove a gas tank from the 45-foot dragger when some grease or oil caught on fire, according to Del Gross, the second assistant chief with the Stonington Fire Department.

The yard crew moved the boat out of the main building and down the rails and quickly used a fire extinguisher on the small fire. That made it easier for fire crews when they arrived on scene, Gross said.

Still, the fire was hard to reach, since it was partially hidden by deck beams and the fuel tanks. Firefighters had to cut a small hole in the fiberglass hull in order to get water and foam on the fire.

No one was injured in the fire.

About 25 firefighters from Stonington and Deer Isle came to the scene. Many of the firefighters from the two towns work at the boatyard, Gross said, which helped with the turnout and the quickness of their response.

A crew from Sedgwick also was called to the scene but was turned back after the fire was brought under control.
