CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island – Some food stores on Prince Edward Island aren’t easily forgetting the recent U.S. ban on province potato exports.
The stores said they would no longer sell American spuds.
Co-op, along with several other grocery stores, stopped selling U.S. potatoes months ago because of the U.S. ban. Most stores began selling American spuds when the ban was lifted, but some stores said their temporary policy is now permanent.
Mitchell Reid of Co-op says many storeowners believe island growers were treated unfairly during the dispute.
The United States banned province spuds after the potato wart fungus was found in the corner of a province field last fall. The United States lifted the ban last month.
Reid says the Co-op’s decision is in support of Prince Edward Island’s potato industry.
