BELFAST – Matt Woodrow surrendered a pair of singles in the first inning, then didn’t allow another hit the rest of the way, as Waldo shut out Brewer 4-0 in their mutual Zone 1 American Legion baseball opener Tuesday night.

Woodrow struck out eight and walked three. He threw 95 pitches, 55 of them strikes.

Devin Potvin had three singles for the winners. Ben Relyea had a single and an RBI, and Ben Cowan had an RBI single.

Joel Barrett and Adam Freeman singled for Brewer.

At Ellsworth, Travis Tripp pitched a three-hitter, striking out seven and walking only two, as the Acadians prevailed.

Jacob Lowell had a two-run double for the winners. Chris Sargent had two singles and two RBIs and Derek Awalt nailed a double.

Justin Veazie had an RBI single for the Storm of Corinna.

At Calais, Orono scored three times in the seventh inning with the help of a hit batsman, two walks, an error and a wild pitch in beating Calais in the season opener for both teams.

Brian Tewhey doubled and singled for the Twins behind winner Brad Wheaton, who scattered seven hits, striking out nine and walking two. Mike Merritt, Chris Rand and Bo Thomas knocked two singles apiece for the winners.

Kevin Loughlin led Calais with two singles and an RBI. Joe Footer singled twice and Steve Colbeth stroked an RBI double.
