Day wins Public Links qualifier

BAR HARBOR – Ryan Day of Lamoine birdied the second playoff hole Wednesday to beat out Vermont’s Jonathan Dudley and win the U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifying tournament for Northern New England held at the Kebo Valley Golf Club.

Day is now eligible to compete in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship scheduled for July 9-14 at Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.

Day, who plays out of Bar Harbor Golf Club in Trenton, shot 76 on the first 18 holes, but responded with a par 70 the second time around. Dudley, from Irasburg, Vt., shot 71-75 in regulation.

Adam Smith of Ellsworth finished third at 150 and Dan Sargent of Ellsworth was fourth at 151. John Royal of Ellsworth, Spud Miller of Northboro, Mass., and Winslow Lewis of Flourtown, Pa., tied for fifth at 157.

Rounding out the field were: Jerry Glidden, Old Town, and Jeff Fields, Glocester, R.I., 159; Todd Kirn, Kennebunk, and Dave Fleming, Hillsboro, N.H., 161; Nicholas Feeney, Rockland, and Richard Norris, Amherst, N.H., 164; Tom Lamb, Bedford, N.H., 174; and Dee McLelland, Andalusia, Ala., 175.
