MOUNT DESERT – A rescue crew on Friday removed an injured woman from atop Acadia Mountain in Acadia National Park.
Marie Vanness, 61, of Arlington, Va., was hiking with family members near the top of Acadia Mountain when she fell and broke her ankle, according to park ranger Richard Rechholtz.
Members of the party called for help using a cellphone, and park officials pulled together a crew of rangers, including a paramedic, and members of MDI Search and Rescue.
The rescue crew got Vanness into a litter and began the process of moving her down the 681-foot mountain. The 15-member rescue crew had to belay the litter at four points during the descent in areas where the terrain was steep and rough, according to Rechholtz.
In addition, the trail was wet and slippery, which may have been a factor in Vanness’ fall.
The rescue crew took Vanness to the bottom of the trail near Route 102. She was transferred to an ambulance and taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth for treatment.
