Taxpayers of Maine should be made aware of a recent problem within the Internal Revenue Service. It seems they have lost a number of returns and checks that were sent to the Pittsburgh office.
Although the IRS has kept the publicity concerning this matter low, it affects many people in the Northeast. In fact, we are finding that not only did they lose tax returns and the related payments, but also quarterly estimated payments. In our office alone 10-15 percent of returns with payments appear to be missing. All taxpayers should check their bank statements to insure that any IRS payments have cleared. If not, they should contact their accountant or tax preparer for advice on how to best handle this situation.
