PORTLAND – Mike Baker, the assistant pro at Bangor Municipal Golf Course, fired a 5-under par 67 in the first round of the 54-hole Greater Portland Open being played Riverside Golf Course in Portland.
Baker is third two-strokes behind first round leader Jerry DiPhilippo, Riverside’s assistant pro, who shot 65 and one stroke behind Terry Hatch of Pottsville, Pa. who carded a 66.
Bob Darling, the pro at Martindale Country Club in Auburn who will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame later this summer, is at 69. Also at 69 is former Greater Bangor Open champ Erig Egloff of Rockville, Md.
Hampden native John Hickson, the teaching pro at Bath Country Club, is 10 strokes back at 75.
