BANGOR – A Glenburn husband and wife were convicted Thursday on charges that they set fire to their Hudson Road home in February of last year.
Blake Langley Jr., 47, pleaded no contest – an admission that state prosecutors had enough evidence for a conviction – to a single arson charge.
His wife, Karen Langley, 27, pleaded guilty to the arson charge in Penobscot County Superior Court.
Justice Jeffrey Hjelm accepted the pleas and entered guilty findings in the case.
Thursday’s ruling came as the result of a plea agreement with state prosecutors, who will recommend that Blake Langley serve five years of a 12-year sentence and six years of probation upon his release.
Karen Langley will serve no more than six months in jail, under the terms of her plea agreement.
An arson charge carries with it a maximum 20 years to 40 years in prison.
Attorneys for the Langleys asked that the sentences be staggered so one parent can remain at home with the couple’s two children.
The couple will be sentenced sometime in August.
Shortly after February fire, investigators determined that a ceramic, electric heater had been turned on and shut inside the bottom drawer of a bedroom dresser. The heater had been placed amid torn paper, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts.
The fire was the second at the home within a year. The cause of the first fire, in 1999, was found to be accidental.
In 1991, Blake Langley was sentenced to two years in prison, one suspended, for soliciting to commit arson while he was living in Kingfield.
