WASHINGTON – The fiscal year 2002 transportation appropriations bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last week would increase funding for Maine by more than $11 million, according to U.S. Rep. John Baldacci.
The $59.1 billion appropriations bill would bolster the Federal Aviation Administration and aviation programs, as well as the Coast Guard – which provide vital services to Maine people, according to Baldacci, who serves on the House Transportation Committee. In addition, the legislation provides support for the following projects, which benefit the 2nd Congressional District:
. The total highway apportionment for Maine in fiscal year 2002 would be $141,959,000, representing an $11.128 million increase over 2001.
. Maine’s total Federal Transit Administration nonurban area formula grants would increase from $4.8 million to $5.249 million.
. Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle is seeking funding for a new hangar. Priority consideration would be given to this project when airport officials apply to the FAA for discretionary funding.
. $1 million for Acadia Trails and Road Projects.
. $13 million national increase in the Essential Air Service Program, which would preserve air service at all of Maine’s EAS airports. This is especially important for the Augusta airport, which had been targeted by the Bush administration for funding elimination.
. $1 million in public transportation bus grants for the state.
. $1 million for University of Maine wood composite research in Orono.
