Proctor hit sparks Bangor Comrades edge Brewer in seventh

BREWER – Bangor Comrades right fielder Kevin Proctor noted that Brewer reliever Joel Barrett had thrown him a first-pitch fastball in his previous at-bat. So he was looking for the same pitch with runners on second and third and one out in the seventh inning.

He guessed right and drilled an opposite-field line-drive single into left center to deliver both runs and spark the Comrades to a 7-5 Zone 1 American Legion baseball triumph at Heddericg Field Monday night.

Proctor’s third straight hit supplied Bangor with a 7-3 lead and the Comrades survived a two-out, two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to improve their record to 6-3. Brewer fell to 5-4.

“It was a good pitch to hit although I was late on it,” said Proctor, who knocked in Andy Sullivan and Billy Chapman.

“That was a huge hit,” said Brewer coach Dave Morris.

Sullivan had pulled a sharp leadoff single to right and Chapman walked before Andy Treadwell sacrificed them along.

Treadwell, who will be a junior at Bangor High in the fall, not only threw five strong innings to pick up his second win in as many decisions, he also homered to trigger the four-run fifth-inning rally that erased a 3-1 deficit.

Treadwell launched a 1-1 fastball from Chad Gomm over the left-field fence.

“It was a perfect pitch to hit: a fastball right down the middle,” said Treadwell.

Proctor followed with an infield single and Ryan Worcester sacrificed him to second. Jimmy Shea grounded a two-out single down the third-base line to tie it.

“I was just concentrating on hitting the ball hard,” said Shea.

Shea was picked off first by Gomm but nobody covered second and first baseman Barrett’s throw sailed into left field as Shea raced to third.

Shea scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Shawn Bouchard grounded a double down the third-base line and scored when Andy Tremble’s grounder went off third baseman Kyle Dalton’s glove for an error.

Treadwell allowed six hits and three runs through five-plus innings with six strikeouts and three walks.

“I thought I pitched well. My curve was my best pitch,” said the hard-throwing Treadwell.

Barrett’s third straight hit, a one-out single, two-out two-strike singles by Chris McHale and Dalton, a walk and two wild pitches made it 7-5 in the seventh but Tremble stranded runners on second and third when Brian Sullivan flied deep to center.

Brewer’s Adam Freeman doubled home a first-inning run but Treadwell’s run-scoring grounder tied it.

Barrett’s RBI double, his first of two, broke the tie in the third and a bases-loaded hit batsman made it 3-1 in the fourth.

Besides Proctor and Barrett, Bangor’s Sullivan and Shea were the game’s other repeat hitters with two apiece.
