Music festival opens with brass

The Bar Harbor Music Festival will open its 35th season by going both contemporary and classical.

First up is the Boston Brass, playing at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. The ensemble was prize winners at the 1992 International Brass Quintet Competition in Narbonne, France. Its members are Richard Kelley, trumpet; Jeff Conner, trumpet; J.D. Shaw, French horn; Ed Clough, trombone; and Andrew Hitz, tuba.

They play more than 100 concerts annually. Also they’ve conducted master classes at the University of Connecticut, Syracuse University, Boston College and Notre Dame. They’ve also presented clinics at educational conferences across the country.

In addition to being featured on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today,” Boston Brass has recorded several albums, two of which appear on the Summit Records label: “Stealing the Show,” a collection of overtures and arias, and “Young Fogeys,” a collage of jazz and swing favorites. Their latest release on the Loft Recordings label, titled “Out of This World,” features heroic music for brass and organ.

The annual Tea Concert will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, at Balance Rock Inn 1903, overlooking Frenchman Bay. Soprano Nancy Loesch, assisted by pianist John Haskell, will perform works by Handel, Rossini, Schubert, Chausson, Poulenc, Puccini, Rodrigo, Victor Herbert and Sigmund Romberg.

Loesch was recently featured with the Lincoln Center’s “Meet the Artist” program. Her opera credits include the American Chamber Opera, the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey, and the Bronx Opera.

Haskell has been an artistic associate of the Bar Harbor Music Festival since 1981. A Hampden resident, he has been a musical director for more than 25 community productions, and has been associated for many years with the Surry Opera Company.

Tea will be served at intermission. This summer’s concert will be dedicated to Mary Cahill Cook of Bucksport, a Festival Auxillary Board member and volunteer for nearly 30 years.

Tickets are $25, $20 for senior citizens and $15 for students. Season subscriptions are $150, 50 percent off the single reserved ticket price. For tickets and information, call 288-5744. Tickets are also available in Bar Harbor at Testa’s Restaurant and the Bar Harbor Inn Gift Shop, as well as the Grasshopper Shop in Ellsworth.
