BANGOR – As a pinch hitter, Orono’s Brad Goody knows his job is to get on base. Nothing heroic to it, he believes.
Whether he wanted to be or not, Goody was the Twins’ savior. He got aboard in the sixth and scored the winning run in a 4-3 Orono victory Thursday at Husson College’s Winkin Complex field.
The win lifts Zone 1-leading Orono to a 10-0 record, while the Suns fall to 1-10.
Orono stuck to ground-ball and line-drive singles, smart baserunning, and solid pitching to peck away at Calais.
Still, the Twins weren’t satisfied with their win.
“We definitely didn’t bring our ‘A’ game,” Goody said. “We should have beaten [Calais] a lot easier. It was kind of discouraging.”
Dow hit Goody in the leg to put the substitute at first to lead off the sixth inning. Singles from Daryl Watson and Nate Cousineau loaded the bases, with Goody at third.
Ryan Levesque, the second pinch hitter of the inning, hit the ball into the infield and the Calais defense chose to throw home to stop the lead runner.
Goody scampered home on Levesque’s fielder’s choice and bulled into Calais catcher Chad Pike. In a split second, Pike dropped the ball. Cheers erupted from the Orono dugout.
“I thought I was out and then I [saw] the catcher drop the ball. I was pretty excited,” Goody said. “[Coach Jay Kemble] called on me to get on base and that’s just what I was trying to do. I wasn’t trying to be a hero. I was just trying to get on.”
Ryan Brown, now 3-0, struck out seven and walked seven. He scattered five hits and kept Calais off-balance with some timely strikeouts.
“I wanted to start off with my fastball and work my curveball and my changeup later on,” Brown said. “It worked out somewhat.”
Brown said that while he was standing on the mound, he felt the pressure of an undefeated season.
“It was a lot of pressure, us being undefeated and them having one win,” he said. “There was a lot of pressure out there.”
The Twins rallied in the third thanks to three straight singles from Ryan Sweeney, Mike Merritt, and Brad Wheaton. Wheaton’s hit knocked in Sweeney and Benn Clark grounded out but drove in Merritt.
Calais tied it in the sixth, setting the stage for Goody’s run.
Wheaton had an RBI single in the first that plated Sweeney.
Calais took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Doug Adams led off with a ground-ball single down the left-field line, advanced on a walk, and scored on a Steve Colbeth single. Colbeth scored on a fielder’s choice by Joe Footer and a Cliff Urquhart RBI groundout.
Pike scored for Calais in the sixth when he got all the way to second on a throwing error, advanced to third on a Scott Flannery sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI groundout by Kevin Loughlin.
Adams and Colbeth each singled twice and Scott Macdonald added a single, but they were the first three in the lineup. No one else got a hit.
“Our bats were a little bit sleepy,” Calais coach Jeff O’Neill said. “Their pitcher did a good job controlling our 2-3-4 hitters today.”
Jeremy Dow, who pitches for Thomas College in Waterville, struck out five and walked three in the loss.
