DURHAM – Divers on Sunday recovered the body of a 12-year-old boy who drowned in the Androscoggin River.
Authorities identified the boy on Sunday as Shane McEnery of Durham.
The boy, one of his brothers and a friend were fishing on the river along Route 136 on Saturday. Around 5 p.m., the boy waded into the water off the shore at River Park, near the Durham Variety Store, and stepped into a drop-off, according to Maine Warden Service Sgt. Don Gray.
Divers found his body around 3 p.m. Sunday in 15 feet of water, about 200 yards from the spot where he was last seen.
The divers suspended their search shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday before resuming Sunday morning.
A Navy helicopter equipped with a thermal imaging camera and a high-powered searchlight continued looking for the boy through the night.
