CALAIS – A local developer has asked the planning board to schedule another public hearing for a zone change on property he owns on South Street.
The board last year, for the third time, rejected Billy Howard’s request.
Howard has asked that the land from the PAWS animal shelter to the corner of South and Manning streets be changed from residential to commercial.
At the planning board meeting Tuesday night, Howard said he was asking for a zone change from the PAWS property to his property and not all the way to Manning Street.
In the past, Howard refused to disclose the use he intended for the property after the area was rezoned to commercial. The city’s zoning ordinance does not require a developer to reveal such plans during that phase of the siting process.
Howard said he would reveal his plans for the property at the public hearing.
During previous hearings, local reaction to the proposed zone change has been mixed, with neighbors supporting such a change, and others objecting.
The public hearing on the issue has been scheduled for Aug. 14.
