CaribouFest has fun for everyone

Wild” animals will roam the streets and rock and folk tunes will fill the air this weekend at CaribouFest: An Agri-Cultural Celebration.

Local artists will turn 25 life-size reindeer into funky works of art. The statues will be on display throughout the city and maps showing their locations will be available. In addition to the caribou, an exhibit featuring the work of student and experienced artists will take place at Collins Pond Park.

The festivities also include concerts at Teague Park ranging from rock to folk to Christian pop. On Friday, the Rustic Overtones will perform songs from their new album, “Viva Nueva!” and Relish will round out the mix with their blend of R&B and acoustic rock. On Saturday, folk musicians Odetta, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Josh White Jr. will present “Glory Bound,” a tribute to the works of Leadbelly, Woodie Guthrie and Josh White. On Sunday, Wayne Watson and Avalon will take the stage for an afternoon of Christian music. McLaughlin’s Big Band and the Northern Maine Chamber Orchestra will perform Saturday afternoon at Collins Pond Park.

There will be plenty to eat at CaribouFest, including a “tour of the world’s foods,” with booths offering French, Hispanic and Lebanese cuisine as well as a lobster bake. The Lions Club will sponsor a bean-hole bean supper. A strawberry festival will be part of the weekend’s festivities, with fresh strawberry shortcake for sale at the Caribou Recreation Center. The Gray Memorial Church will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday morning and afternoon.

Other highlights of CaribouFest include: a carnival from Wednesday through Sunday at Teague Park; a display of more than 75 antique tractors; a marionette medley by Dan Grady; the 23-mile County Cycle Classic bicycle race from Van Buren to Caribou; tours of Caribou residents’ gardens; the 5K S.W.
