Roxanne Quimby’s assessment of the impact a national park in northern Maine would have on the people living there reflects the views of the Boston-based RESTORE organization. She says in the July 10 Bangor Daily News: “Very few people derive a living from the woods. They cut some wood, farm some vegetables and make some crafts to sell at fairs.”

I cannot imagine a more cynical and arrogant attitude nor can I imagine a better reason to oppose these people and their park. They obviously have no idea how much northern Mainers depend on the forest industry, nor do they care.

Her statement is an ominous look at the future of many people who live in the northern half of the state rather than an accurate reflection of their current situation. The only part she left out is that they may very well end up living in tents like she did in the ’70s. (Maybe she thinks they do now.)

Shame on her and her organization and shame on the people in southern Maine who, according to the polls, support her organization, views and this park. The people who live in northern Maine are not being fairly treated or represented.
