California woman slips, breaks ankle in Acadia

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – A California woman had to be evacuated out of the park Friday after she slipped and broke her ankle while hiking up Pemetic Mountain.

Betty Armour, 52, of Oxnard, Calif., was hiking up the mountain from the Bubble Rock parking lot with her sister when she slipped at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to Ranger Richard Rechholtz. After another hiker with a cellphone called for help, 15 rangers and members of Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue made their way up the trail to carry Armour out, he said.

The response crew secured Armour in a rescue litter before bringing her down the steep slope, crisscrossing back and forth across the trail in order to reduce the incline of their route, Rechholtz said. He added that Armour’s litter had to be belayed with ropes for roughly 600 total feet on the steeper sections of the trail.

The rescue crew got Armour back to the Bubble Rock parking lot at roughly 4:30 p.m., Rechholtz said. She was taken for treatment to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor.
