Local artists of all ages who work in all mediums are invited to participate in the Lincoln Memorial Library Art Show planned for Monday, Aug. 20, through Saturday, Aug. 25, at the library in Lincoln.

“We’re hosting an art show for local artists, in the area, who would like to put their work on public display,” said librarian Lynn Lowell.

“We encourage amateurs who really don’t exhibit often, as well as children, to enter the show.

“We’re looking for artists of all ages,” she stressed. “We have 30 people who’ve expressed an interest so far, but we would like many more people to register.”

Lowell said there are some requirements to enter the show, such as being limited to three works per artist, and size restrictions.

She explained that, if the show were to have a theme, it would be of Maine and local, native artists.

“We’re looking for all mediums, including photographs, sculpture and others,” Lowell said.

Registrations are being accepted now through the end of the month.

An artists’ reception is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the library.

The art show hosts will offer ribbons in three categories: Librarian’s Choice, People’s Choice and Artists’ Choice.

Lowell said the library is working hard “to get the word out” about the show in the hope that many people, young and old, who perhaps don’t regularly display their work, will want to enter.

She asks that artists call the library at 794-2765 for details on the show and to obtain registration material.

The library is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.

What a pleasure it was to learn that more than $50,000 was raised during the Shurfine Food Stores Charity Classic sponsored by Associated Grocers of Maine Inc. of Gardner.

Playing in the sixth annual event at two sites last month, 284 golfers helped raise money for the Ronald McDonald houses in Bangor and Portland, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine.

In the six years of the tournament, more than $250,000 has been raised for these charities.

It was a pleasure to learn, as well, that Phil and Laurie Chabot, owners of P&L Country Market in Dexter, also reached their goal of raising more than $10,000 for the charities through a raffle and by selling Ronald McDonald “houses” and Make-A-Wish “clouds” before the tournament.

Last month, Jerry Stanhope of the Hampden Historical Society called to report that organization was searching for Hampden’s oldest resident in order to present that individual with the society’s Kinsley House Cane.

The presentation has been made to Hazel Clisby of Hampden, who celebrated her 98th birthday Saturday, June 16.

With family, friends and neighbors gathered at her home, the Chesuncook Village native and 1920 Milo High School graduate received the cane which is retained by the oldest living resident of Hampden.

Clisby taught eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse after graduating from high school, then moved to Bangor, graduated from business school, and worked as a legal secretary.

At the end of World War II, she bought her home in Hampden, where she has resided ever since.

Reginald Bowden is president of the Orono High School Class of 1951 50th Reunion committee.

Working with Bowden on this very special event are classmates Dana Devoe and Dawn Evans Lacadie.

Bowden writes that the reunion, which takes place over two days, Saturday, July 21, and Sunday, July 22, “is expected to reunite classmates from around the country who graduated from the school on June 13, 1951.”

The reunion opens with an informal lunch at Pat’s Pizza in Orono, followed by a tour of the high school campus conducted by OHS principal Kathryn Knox.

Bowden explained the Class of ’51 attended high school in the 1938 building, which was the first building constructed in the present complex.

Reunion attendees will participate in a Veterans Remembrance Ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Maine Korean War Memorial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.

The service will honor deceased classmates who were military veterans, and a special tribute will be paid to classmate U. S. Marine Corps Cpl. Cecil Waddell, who was killed in action in Korea in 1953.

An extensive collection of memorabilia will be on display throughout the class dinner Saturday evening at Pilot’s Grill in Bangor.

Attending the dinner, as a special guest, will be Evelyn Rush McLaughlin of Nashua, N.H. The Benedicta native taught languages at OHS during the Class of ’51 years.

More information about the reunion can be obtained by calling Bowden at 866-2255, or Devoe at 866-4536.

A few openings still remain for the St. Joseph Healthcare 12th annual Frank Chapman Memorial Golf Tournament.

Presented by Merrill Bank and the law firm of Kozak & Gayer, the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Bangor Municipal Golf Course on Webster Avenue in Bangor.

Proceeds benefit St. Joseph Healthcare, and are designated for the purchase of a laser imager used in conjunction with X-ray equipment.

Interested golfers can call Diane Galutia at the St. Joseph Healthcare Development Office, 262-1740.
