Dean Scribner of Las Vegas raises an interesting question about the Bennett brothers – Isaac, John and Nathaniel – who were among the first settlers of Guilford.
Because there are so many descendants of these Bennetts, who were born in Gloucester, Mass., to Isaac and Dorcas (Wharff) Bennett, we’ll share the question and answer in Family Ties.
“There seems to be some controversy as to whether David Bennett who married Lucy Clark is the David born Sept. 15, 1797, to Capt. John Bennett, or the David born Sept. 3, 1794, to John’s brother, Isaac,” Scribner wrote.
According to a Bible record given to me by my grandmother, Ione Bennett Moore, the David who married Lucy was born in 1794, making him the son of Isaac and Margaret (Noble) Bennett. This record has been published only rarely, so I’ll print it here:

Additional information: The Bennett brothers are buried in the Guilford Center cemetery.
Ione and Alvarus Bennett were the children of Walter and Rena (Bennett) Bennett.
Walter was the son of Sumner, and the grandson of David. Rena was the daughter of Prosper Alvarus Bennett, and the granddaughter of Prosper Bennett – a brother of the aforementioned David Bennett. Walter and Rena were second cousins because their grandparents were siblings.
