ROCKLAND – The board of trustees of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School has announced the appointment of Galen D. Todd of Ridgefield, Conn., as the school’s fourth president.

Todd will succeed Joan Welsh, who announced her retirement in January after 10 years of service.

Todd is a former vice president and business manager of sales and marketing for the former Champion International Corp. in Connecticut. Before his 20-year career at Champion, Todd worked as a forest management consultant for major corporations, government agencies, American Indian tribes and private and corporate landowners.

Todd has a bachelor’s degree from Marietta College and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan.

He is an alumnus of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.

Hurricane Island, the largest Outward Bound school in the world, teaches wilderness and adventure-based skills with courses on the East Coast from Maine and the Chesapeake Bay to the Florida Keys. The nonprofit educational organization offers safe and challenging outdoor programs to encourage growth and self-discovery and inspire confidence, self-reliance, concern for others and care for the environment.
