Millinocket gains championship spot All-stars hand Orono-Veazie first loss

MILLINOCKET – Millinocket rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to beat Orono-Veazie 7-6 in Little League all-star baseball action for ages 11-12 Wednesday.

Travis Martin scored the game-winner on a wild pitch in the sixth, following an RBI game-tying single by Nick Cyr as Millinocket prevailed in District 3 action.

Millinocket advanced to Friday’s championship round. It is undefeated and another team would have to beat it twice to claim the title.

Cyr had three singles and two RBIs overall. Jacob Walsh had a double and two RBIs.

Troy Jellison had three singles for Orono-Veazie, as did Max Winter. He drove in two runs.

Acadian 9, Bucksport 5

At Bar Harbor, Max Bickford’s two-run double powered Acadian to victory, forcing another game between the same teams Thursday for the District 1 title.

Nick Swanson also doubled, and Justin Gilmartin had two singles.

Chris McGuire paced Bucksport with a single and a double, and Matt Jackson doubled.

At Bangor, Josh Murchinson, Jesse Miller and Matt Brown each had an RBI single as Lincoln took advantage of 15 Bangor West walks.

Derek Libby doubled for the winners.

Jacob Silver had Bangor West’s only two hits, a pair of singles.

Hampden 17, Bangor East 13

At the Harry S. Dalton Complex in Brewer, Hampden scored six runs in the sixth inning, and Nolan Turner pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth to lead Hampden to the win.

Jonathan Johnson paced Hampden with three singles and two RBIs. Josh Tardiff doubled twice and drove in three runs. Turner hit two singles. Spencer Ranger and Greg O’Donnell each singled and knocked in two runs.

Jordan Clarke had three RBIs on a double and a single for Bangor East. Chad Kelley hit two doubles and a single and added two RBIs. Sebastian Dionne singled twice and had an RBI.

Little League softball, 9-10

Bangor West raising funds

Local 9- and 10-year-old girls will be playing their first softball game under the lights in the state Little League championship tournament Saturday in Sanford at 6:30 p.m.

The Bangor West All-Stars won four straight games en route to the District 3 title while outscoring their opponents 80-27.

The team is raising funds for its trip, which costs approximately $5,000. The team has already raised nearly $2,000 from local businesses including Wight’s Sporting Goods, BTI Financial Group, Pepsi, Husson College, Quality Jewelers and Governor’s Restaurant. Those interested in supporting the team may contact Chris Parker (942-6538) or Mark Taylor (947-6041). They are scheduled to leave Friday.

Team members include: Melinda Bonney, Stephanie Comstock, Erin Dean, Eliza Estabrook, Jennifer Herbert, Emily Lindsay, Sarah MacDonald, Lindsey Stevenson, Katie Taylor, Megan Parker, Katie Porter, Chelsea Pratt, and Megan Pratt.

American Legion baseball

Penquis 4, Bangor 3

At Dover-Foxcroft, Dereck Boucher and Matt Foster each had an RBI single as the Navigators prevailed.

Kyle Wentworth had two singles for Penquis, and Adam Russell singled.

Brian Worcester had an RBI double for the Comarades. Josh Young and Andy Tremble each doubled, singled, and knocked in a run.

At Belfast, Gabe Westphal’s RBI double lifted the Acadians to the win.

Jacob Lowell and Josh Gray each had an RBI single for the winners and Brandon Colbeth doubled.

John Bonaney had an RBI double for Waldo. Chris Carmen also doubled while Devin Potvin and Kenton Spaulding rapped singles.
