Jay Charles’ July 16 letter, “Leave bully pulpit,” presents two views of beliefs promoted in America. He is correct that Christianity is a religion and we find this in the dictionary.
People who followed the teachings of Jesus Christ were called believers. The name Christ is the official title of Jesus, meaning the anointed one (see Isaiah 61).
America’s culture is not only characterized as in the post-Christian era, but is becoming known as postmodernist. “Postmodernism rejects any notion of a universal, overarching truth and reduces all ideas to social constructions shaped by class, gender, and ethnicity.” America has become the “imperial republic of the autonomous Self.”
Jay Charles’ belief system is called secular humanism, which has been officially registered by the U.S. government as a religion.
